The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Why would you say he did that?
The particular saddle we used was heavy even for a western saddle, and he was use to light racing and english saddles before that. So I think it was the unexpected weight combination. :-) I still laugh when I think about it.

I wouldn't have thought a change in saddle would make that much difference.
It usually doesn't, it just depends on the horse. This horse was always a character. :-) If you think it might make a difference with Harley walk him around first, but I wouldn't worry too much.

Two local old codgers I bought hay from before came by and they've got hay they are baling today. The dad is ninety, and his son is 70.

Holy jeepers crow! Wow!

The horse seemed to move on his own. I'm sure the rider was the one controlling but it looked so effortless like as you say he was just "riding"

Actually, it probably was the horse moving on it's own. Good cutting horses read and move the cow. They are moving already before the rider would have had time to read and then send an instruction. The scoring in cutting horse competition is based on how little the rider assists.

The amazing part about it to me is that a prey animal like the horse can learn to think and stalk like a predator.

Of course you're right! I was just humbled when they first came by to deliver hay a few years ago. I had talked to the dad, and yeah - he was old, but still strong, tanned and wiry looking. He said "My son will be with me to help stack it too". I was picturing a young man, and not a 'son' who was older than my dad! And yet, they could work harder than I could!

Well then, I guess you won't believe that Okie likes to chase dogs then:')

It would have been even cuter if the son had told you his dad would be helping him:')

I've had 90 plus little ladies come dragging 70 something year old men by their hands up to me to introduce me to their "babies" :')

I agree, but you'd be surprised what some people do! My grandfather just retired at 87 and at 88 he still golfs and does everything that he wants to.

So does my pony.... she'll go after a dog, but that is really defensive and territorial... like the cow or deer who will run a predator off a calf. They chase them because deep in their instinct they percieve it as a threat, even though in their experience it is more like a game.

Rather than being 'reactive' like running off a dog or a lower horse in the pecking order, a cutting horse's behavior is distinctly proactive and stalking, very cat-like in the way they look at the cow.

LOL. after spending the day with my dad I feel older then he is:) He's 75. His body is like a road map he has had so many surgeries. We always expected for him to die first as he was always having things wrong, was over weight. My mother was always very heath concious. She died 15 years ago.

My dad has had a lung removed a kidney removed, both shoulders operated on one twice, both hips replaced one twice, 3 hernia operations, hemroid operation:), baloone heart surgery. He plays golf 3 X's a week and worked in the Golf Pro shop till about a month ago.

Him and his wife went on an Alaskan Cruise last year, one of his hips pop out of joint, they had to fly him to shore for an operation, he was back on the boat that next night. He'll probably put us in our graves. Altho he is very active he's really not in that great of health tho. He only wears me out because he's always got something to gripe at me about. This time it was because I haven't sent him a picture of JP. He wants one in the mail. I've e-mailed him tons of them, but he wants on in the mail. Oh well, I guess he's entitled to his little whims:)

Oh man. I need to go to the stables. I have been home less than an hour. I came in and the utility door open. I have a 450 utility bill this month. The kids are screaming because they can't get out to the back door. It's jammed. My son moved the babysitters money and she needs it before leaving. I go to the back to open the door and scatch my hand on a nail. The door won't budge so I come back around. The dog gets out. I come back and pry the door open. The kids run out and start fighting over a swing. The big one pushes the little one. I make him come in and sit in the red chair six minutes. I found the babysitters money. She is watching them while I go to my room and eat a sandwich. She comes and "tells me" the baby has the step ladder and pulling my green oranges off the tree. I told her to go get the ladder. The door left open and the oldest sprays the water hose on my dining room floor and then Eddie calls and tells me he has a meeting and going to be late. Yeah right. He's not stupid:')

Isn't it something the way that works out? Your mom and dad sound like mine.... My dad smokes and everything, he's still here, but my mom was a lot better and tried to be healthy, and she got cancer at 58.

Yes, your dad will have his whims.... an email picture isn't really a picture unless it's on paper ;~D

Step 1): Fire the babysitter.
Step 2): RUN
Step 3): Comes after step two.

:-)
