Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Kids are remarkable that way aren't they!?
Bay was fine today, back to pretty normal. I am a little eager to get back and make sure... am nervous to have left him alone all afternoon.
That's good. I didn't go out to the stables tonight. I was late getting back and tired. Tomorrow, though :') Our digital camera we bought here!!!!

My experience with kids his age are, when they take that first fall they either are like him, or they never want to do it again.
It's like their either very gutsy because they just don't understand how they can be hurt so they don't know to be scared, or their so timid everything scares them and they haven't developed enough to persist even tho they are scared.
I hate seeing small children take falls. Alot of time it's as hard to get some of them over it as it is to get some of them to have some caution to them.

Heather coming to ride today. I think Harley is ready to go. He still seemed a bit ouchy even after the shoes were put on Tues. Farrier said he had a pretty good bruise on one foot:(. But didn't seem to be gimping yesterday. I think we'll give him a try. The only problem is Heather enjoys riding so much I have a susupision she doesn't give an honest report on how they feel. It's always, Oh he's fine. One time Rocky lost a shoe out on the trail and I know she had to have felt a difference but never said anything. She always rides behind me and I didn't notice. But when it came off (she told me later, said she didn't realize it was the shoe), but something hit her on the leg, we were trotting. It could have been from inexperience that she didn't put it together something hitting her, and him suddenly starting to gimp. But I know he had to have gotten gimpy and I think she should have mentioned it. I've told her alot of times if something doesn't feel normal tell me. I can't remember now what it was she said but after we got back I got the impression she had known something had happened but didn't say anything till we got back.
Harley was gimping sooooo bad last week after the last time we rode that I think he had to have been really bad on the trail, but she just kept saying it's not that bad. I never rode him between Monday and Wed last week. I was planning on riding him on Thurs. but that was when I realized how bad he was. When I led him out of his run Wed, I thought he looked sore so I lunged him a time or two around, but I messed up doing it on the grass. I told her once out on the trial to let me know if he seemed bad.
I don't blame her, I've met very few kids who want to ride as bad as she does. It's almost seems like an obesession with her. It's funn a few times Jenny has come up and rode with us. YOu know Jenny is the only one before Heather that really rode Rocky, she trained him, other then the breeding side of Rocky he's really Jenny's horse. The times Jenny has been here it was very obvious that Heather rather resented her. She wouldn't hardly say a word and seemed a bit resentful. I think from stuff she has said she pretends he's her horse. I guess Jenny being here kind of busts that bubble.
I'd really like to be able to take her somewhere to compete on him but it's hard because that stuff usually gets over so late, and I'd have to run her home and she lives pretty far from here. I thought we had found a place, but then came to find out they don't allow studs:( Stupid rule. Especially when some of the horses geldings and mares there are pretty crazy.

Hair, I looked in one of my books fot things toxic to horses. There is a list about 25. If you don't have a link yet from your other thread and want to see, let me know and I'll post them.
Denial in the "go, no-go" decision.... The want to keep going hits all of us when it's something we really want to do.... The maturity and empathy to consider the horse and sacrifice her own fun for him is hard to have when you are a kid.... and some people never get it.
But I hope he is ready! I hope you can have a good ride.
Thanks... I might have seen similar lists... it's not quite as good as having an expert walk the property, which is what I'd like to do. I did find out that that 'fireweed' is probably not the culprit, so that thread was good for me!
I watched him awhile today before she got here, and I think he still needs to have a few more days off. So she rode Rocky and I rode Reba. We went about 2 1/2 hours before it got too hot.

Oh, stopped and got some Krispy Kremes on the way home from taking her home. Time for afternoon coffee and a donut. UUUMMMMMMM. Like I really need it:).
But Mack will be here in a bit and we have to do book work:(
Becky
Great! I am wondering if I should be careful about working Bay for a while longer?
Boy did I yell at him this morning. He got all snotty at feeding time and bit the pony hard in the butt. Left a skinned patch. ouch.... But I guess he's feeling better if he is that protective of breakfast.
You have to do book work.... I was gonna mow, but my mower won't start :~\
This is JMO, but I think once their over it their over it. I would think by now he doesn't even remember the incident.
I'd be riding Rusty now if it wasn't for everything else going on with him.
Giving him this antibiotic is a pain. I was hoping for an injectiable kind but got a powder. Since he's such a picky eater I mix it with syrup and syringe it in him. But mixed up with syrup there is more then I have room in one syringe.

Yeah, Mack finally, after years of trying, talked me into doing the book work for our business. I'm still kind of in the training mode, and he has been so busy with the building that my training has been kind of hit and miss. The end of last week I locked up our internet sevice with the bank and he just got it opened back up:), so I haven't been doing much of anything.

Remember I told you about the daughter of a friend of mine got some mules. She (Michelle) just called me. I told her mother (Debbie) Sunday at breakfast that if it was me I would start by teaching them to lunge, and that if Michelle wanted to she could come out here and practice lunging on one of my horses that already know how because she's never done it either. Makes it a bit easier if one or the other at least nows what they're doing. She's coming now.
Debbie told me Sunday that one day last week Michelles husband had one of the mules out on a lead rope and told Michelle to jump on. She did, the mule took off and she thought it was going to crash into a parked car (didn't realize how quick they can turn), so as she started to bail the mule turned and she really hit the ground hard. Debbie had to go stay with her for a day because she has a couple of very young kids and needed help because she was so sore.
This could be interesting to watch the progress:)
She has a gelding and a mare, named them Bonnie and Clyde:)
Becky
Interesting indeed!
Most mules I know probably don't lunge.... funny thing about them is that they typically have such horrid gaits that people use them to walk on trail and avoid doing much else. My friend's mule was confused by me wanting a trot. He did it, but it had been years since anyone wanted that!
I would also show her how to ground drive.
Actually.... if they are inexperienced, I would probably try to get them to do something else, like find animals that are broke ;~D. They could all get hurt.
Well, I know the competitive trail rides I have gone to the mules lunge.
I've never ground driven one. I've seen it done, and could probably do it. I'll tell her next time.
She picked up real quick on handling the lunge line. I even had her work on Reba who doesn't lunge that well to get the feel of one that won't go easy like Harely did.
She said the gelding has been broke to ride just is very green. She also says he is very laid back calm and gentle.
Becky
LOL. Those things are soooooooo good, I always make myself sick with them because they are so sweet.
