The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well he's still alive. Thanks for asking.

I went ahead and put him in his stall. Flies are bad. He's nibbling at his feed, I've just been giving it to him a little at a time. His respiration is a bit fast, but then it usually is.

I think he is still experiencing some discomfort. Right before I put him in his stall he was standing stretched out like he was going to pee, but didn't. Maybe he's sore from cramping so bad last night...???

Funny the vet called me awhile ago to see how he was doing. Never had a vet do that before. AS long as he's not trying to roll or not acting like he is really sick she said just keep on what I'm doing now.

Hang in there Cindy, it will get easier with time.

Becky

You'll get there with the mounting issue.

Glad your ride went well!

Thanks. I noticed on an another post that you said it takes him awhile to pee. Is he going as usual now? Can horses have stones or prostrate problems like people? Just a though but if a guy reported with difficulty voiding and discomfort I would think of the above. I would palpate a bladder to check for fullness but no idea how on a horse:') The vet probably already thought of this though or she would have cathed him. Wouldn't hurt to mention though.

Right before I put him in his stall he was standing stretched out like he was going to pee, but didn't.

Still not out of the woods yet then, but perhaps better? Anything we know of for soothing tummies feedwise? Sure wish there was a known source for the ache in the first place!

Wish I knew what caused the ache in the first place.

Oh, I forgot to say, (kind of in a fog today:), that the vet told me to give him Maloox to soothe his stomach, incase this is from ulcers.

Your birthday? :')

I've been working in the kitchen most of the afternoon, cleaning counters, pantry and cabinets. I've got a pot of beans on. I usually am up til 1 or 2 . My quiet time. I've started cooking the next evening meal so I'm not rushed. The first time I cooked spaghetti. My son got up and asked if he could have some, then a few minutes later my husband came in. So at midnight they are all sitting around eating. I keep getting teased about what's for breakfast. They are eyeing my beans tonight:')

Becky,
I found these web sites in my email with the rescue groups that I have found they are about barefoot horses and do it naturally.

www.tribeequus.com
www.naturalhorsetrim.com

I thought you might want to check them out before the shoer comes just to see if there was something in there that you might find interesting. I haven't check them out myself yet but i will later.

Thanks.

I've seen the natural horse trimming site. Celia found some woman last year around here that does some kind of "natural" trim. She tried it. Lamed her horse up for about 2 wks:). Really.

Yesterday afternoon after I started Rusty on the Maalox, he really started looking better, coincidence, meds finally wearing off, or Maalox??? Probably never know. I'm going to keep giving it to him anyway till after I run the blood work again and we figure out if he has ulcers. I'll get the antibiotics tomorrow.

Harley is doing alot better. He'll be good to go again after Tues. when he gets his shoes.

Yes, he was cleaning up everything I gave him.

This morning he ate a full ration. That is unusal. Lot's of times he doesn't finish it off all at once. The vet said that was a symptom of a horse with ulcers, if they don't finish all at once. I'm thinking the maalox is what is helping.

Not today. By the time we get home from church this time of year it's way to hot to ride. I generally give them Sun. off anyway. But I would have rode the mare today if it wasn't so hot. I didn't ride her yesterday, I was sooo tired.
Will start fresh tomorrow, then by Wed. Harley and Rocky will be shoed so I'll be back to a full schedule:)

Intresting incident just happened.

I was outside moving the sprinkler, and I noticed a bunch of my chickens standing out in the pasture. All of a sudden the Golden Polish rooster took off running towards the fence line where lots of times I've seen coyote either come in or run off. I few seconds later Grizzly came around barking and running over there. The rooster came back but Grizzly kept barking. So I walked out there and sure enough there was a coyote slinking around over there.

Why in heavens name would that rooster take off for a coyote??? I would not have thought they would be protective like that. I'm guessing that was what he thought he was doing, or it had been decided amongst the flock it was his turn to be the sacrafice:) I haven't lost any big chickens in a while. Few young ones, and that could be to anything, not necessarily coyotes, hawks, owls etc.
