The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I bought one of those loud sports whistles the day before my fall. Okie does not run from me and will usually follow me to the gate but he waits for me to walk out to the pasture to get him. He's a QH and as Becky said they like drums. I beat the feed bucket and he will follow me down the outside of the fence. Anyway, I was thinking about trying to get him to come to me with the whistle. I was going to work softly with it at first in case horses freak out at the sound. The plan was that if I was ever on a trail ride and we parted that I could blow it and get him to come back. Ironic huh? :')

Huh. That's interesting. To get him to associate the whistle with coming to you, I would try to whistle while drumming the feed bucket, or doing something else that you normally do while you go to catch him... Of course, that could also just teach him to run for the hills! ;-) Or he'll just look at you like you have three heads. :-)
But I'm sure we'd all like to know how that works out! I know I'm curious!

I think I saw a member of a latin band playing something like that once
Neat! Did it look something like this?

I posted another picture. Do I get a cookie? :-) :-) To protect my own behind, I borrowed this off of the burke website. :-)

Good morning.

Have a good ride today:).

I don't usually ride on Fri. It's grandkid day at grammoe's:) Today I will only have 1, easy day.

I wouldn't ride anyway, giving everyone except Reba off till they get shoes.

How was the symphony? I liked the music from Lord of the Rings. Best part of the movie.

Becky

I'll let you know but it's going to have to be put on hold for a little bit. I got the idea from a horse magazine. The horse pro said to put treats in a small plastic jar and rattle it, get the horse used to it and if you are seperated (I just love that PC term for falling off lol) shake it and have the horse trained to come back to you. This depends though on carrying a container on the horse and it separating with you. Also, I don't care how tight a lid or how much cotton I used Okie would still smell it and not be motivated to move forward. I't didn't seem workable to me but the theory good so I thought of a whistle. We'll see. It would have to be assocaited with a treat though at first but he gets that anyway (vi-sorb with a cup of pellets)

Yeah but it was of wood. We were on the River Walk at San Antonio and the Marriot had a SA band playing outside. Each one had a unique instrument. Beautiful music.

Well, I will agree that it was a ~good~ part, but I think we liked the movies better than you did ;~D

Whew what a late night! Got home around midnight. Concert was very good, a really good time was had by all! ecurbh is writing a more lengthy report, I'll ping y'all to it when he posts it to the Hobbit Hole.

We have the horse shoer coming today - in about an hour, or whenever Mark rolls out of bed. :~D

Shhhhh! The pets are hunting our yard mole this morning.

Cat: I'll cover this rear exit, you go in the front door.

They made a mess, but no mole has been bagged yet.

How cute!

My parent's Siamese cat used to team up with a Himalayan that took up with my parents. Freddie-the-Freeloader (the Himmy) would elaborately, slowly, and obviously stalk the moles, chipmunks, whatever . . . and Magnificat would head around the other side and grab them while they were nervously watching Freddie. We used to watch from inside the house and just howl with laughter - it was funny for everybody but the main course . . .

Shelley the Wonder Dog catches the yard moles on her own. She's brought me three or four. The score so far is 2 squirrels and I stopped counting at 10 chipmunks. She also has brought me two live birds, a tufted titmouse off the feeder and a goldfinch that hit the glass. Neither bird was harmed (the goldfinch recovered himself after about an hour in a shoebox full of cotton wool and a heat lamp). A blue finch also hit the glass, but was dead before she found it and brought it to me. Hopefully we'll be able to wean her off songbirds and on to ducks and pheasant . . . another training session this Saturday.

I won't! I'm actually bringing someone with me to take pictures. Since it's my first time there, I hope that the instructor doesn't mind. But who knows.
The clouds are looking a little threatening here, though. I hope that the weather behaves until 7. I'll be done by then!

Thanks. You have a good time this evening. Is it far from your house? I was so happy when I got my own horse and could ride whenever I wanted.
