The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I have family in that neck of the woods (near Worcester), but it has just never worked out to go to a concert when I've been there.

If they're barefoot, I'd go every 8 weeks, because they'd only need a trim. But if they have shoes, 8 might be pushing it. If they seem tender or they're tripping a lot, I wouldn't go every eight. But I'm sure you know that. :-)

I'm about an hour or so south (east west, who knows?) from Worcester (wis-tah) ;-) off of 495. Have you ever been to Tanglewood?

I'm an avid whistle player. My prized posession is my Burke low A. I'm going to be purchasing an Burke low D soon. :-) I love whistles as much as I love horses. :-)

LOL. I think I'll take the beer and give Harley the bute:)

Just got back from town getting some bute. I got him out to give it too him, and then turned him loose in the front yard to graze awhile. He walked across the grass just fine. Didn't look gimpy at all. Does that mean he will be OK? That it's not as bad as it looked when he was in the arena. The ground in the arena is pretty hard. I really feel bad. Should walk across hot asphalt covered with broken glass.

The bute I got was a paste like a wormer.

Cool - I haven't seen paste. Paste would be easy!

I have a bottle of a couple hundred big ole pills I have to mash up. I guess, they store easier than paste in that quantity. I am not to the point of giving it very frequently, but since Bay's symptoms when his feet hurt are so hard to see, I give him some when he seems a little down. Just a couple times this year, knock on wood.

No. I did spend a summer at the Aspen Festival once though... that was a wonderful time! A concert nearly every day, lots of classes and lessons, beatiful hiking opportunities... ~sigh~

I'm sure that you did no major damage. :-) Just rest him for a while and see how he goes. He should be ok in a day or so. :-)

Usually you can buy them pre-made. My trainer made hers though, though I'm not sure with what. I just know that her horses looked pretty darn funny walking around with diapers on their feet! :-)

Give him a beer, some molasses and some key lime yogurt, put diapers on his feet and take a picture.
HAHAHAHAHAHA! Now that would be a picture.

Well I guess it's about time for me to get back to Okie. I have the boys this evening and bath time a bummer so... I striped them to their underwear and took them out side and let them play with the hose. I even sprayed Cindy down. I kept having to tell her whoa though:') I'm sure my son will not be amused. I doubt if they will ever want a normal bath again "Grannys cool" lol

That was funny. I couldn't respond at the time because I was stressing over the horse, my DIL was pulling in to drop off JP, my grandson, I needed to unload her horse as she took Blake, my other grandson to my daughter, using my car and she was running late. JP needed a diaper change, the phone rang, uuummmm, and Susie got stepped on by Grizzly and was crying and running around on 3 legs. Everything has quieted down now, so I see the amusement in the statement:)

Diapers do make good bandages for horses as do Kotex. I've used then lots of times.

I haven't heard of whistles before. Is like a harmonica?

The pennywhistle? No, it's a pipe with holes in it. Blow in one end, notes come out the other. It's really fascinating. :-)

I think I saw a member of a latin band playing something like that once. Interesting.
