Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I was so excited I couldn't sleep last night. Tossed and turned and thought of stuff we need to do this morning and thought out the whole route!
LOL. Been there done that, many times.

Gotta go out around 7 and sedate the pony.... If it was warmer I'd hose Bay down then too so he doesn't sweat out dirt (I hate that!) and grab the lunge line, I love to have a long line with me, and bring his halter and wear some good socks with our new riding boots because their new, and look real good at my bridle because I saw a spot that was looking worn, and wonder if I should put his leg wraps on for the trailer, and Bay definately needs his helmet in Tiff's trailer and don't forget my saddle and don't forget the camera!

And.... "Have a good time"!
ecurbh is snoring away. I think he was excited and restless last night too, but he is doing all our breathing now!
I planted a red bud in my garden last year. I was told at the nursery it was a slow growing variety. I want a small ornamental type tree. Well this thing has just gone crazy. An yesterday we had a storm go thru with alot of high wind. And now it even looks worse. If it was out it would be OK, but in the garden it is looking a bit wild. I pruned it some this spring after flowering as good as I could understand from internet instructions. But it keeps growing out this long long branches that stick out. I want a more round, tight look. Before the storm yesterday the long branches at least stood up pretty straight, but now they are hanging all droopy. I was wondering if I could/should prune it again now, and how much, and how:), or do I need to leave it alone till next year. Here is a picture:

Whenever we had a big family ride planned Mack always did something the evening before the ride like replace the floor in the trailer, or work on the brakes of the trailer or car, or something really major. He just never gets in a hurry about stuff....until the last minute:). I ususally always got stuff ready a week ahead of time. Last minute planned rides could send me into a dither. I finally typed out a check list and typed it inside my trailer, one for one day rides and one for overnighters. Helped a bunch. If your going to be doing this often I would recommend it. Keeps stress down, at least for me:) I also had a storage box that I kept routine my overnight stuff in, and made a list of things in it as they ran out so that when I got home I knew what I needed to replace. (Paper towels, toilet paper, matches, paper plates, etc.)
Becky
I am not familiar with that tree, but it looks like a fruit tree in shape. You can prune whenever you like for shape, you just may affect how much it flowers or fruits if you do it at the wrong time. I wouldn't think now would affect next spring.
I would trim out and thin it near the bottom, and less at the top. better to remove a whole branch than trim the branch shorter... but some you may want to. Just note that it may fork into two branches where you cut.
Thanks, didn't realize you knew about trees:) That seems to be what it has done, forked where I pruned last spring. The bottom is what is bothering me. It's shading the plants under it now way to much. I just didn't know if it would kill it to prune at the wrong time.
Becky
I am like you, planning wise. When I was trail riding a lot, my stuff was always together, but now I haven't gone all year, and this ride coming up at the last minute has got my mind going trying to get my stuff back together..... and just a little excitement and nervousness that it all go well for ecurbh's first ride. Any prayers for his safety, and that Bay's feet feel good too would be appreciated. He has been so strong this year and I think he feels good. This ride will probably be 8 miles or so, not far or hard riding, but longer than he's gone just here at home this summer.
It will never kill it to prune, only affect it's blooming or fruit in the short term.
Prayers sent for you all's saftey. I'm sure you'll have fun.
I'll be thinking of you guys while I'm out riding, which reminds me I need to get going. It's going to heat up here pretty quick, high humidity after that rain:(.
Becky
Thanks! You also have a great ride.... we'll talk all about it when we get home!
I hope you keep his claws trimmed. ;-) (Cat scratches are dangerous.)
No actually I don't but I just learned last year about cat scratch disease. My SIL had to have surgery on his neck for a swollen lymph node that turned out to be swollen from cat scratch disease. My daughter had it to only milder. Bink is an indoor/outdoor cat. So he needs his claws.
Becky
Then I went to town for gas for the mower, mowed the yard, then trimmed my tree. Is it better or did I get to carried away:):
Seems like there was something else I need to ask....uuuuummmmmm.....OOOHHHHH, How was THE RIDE:)?
Becky
Cat sratches? Just remember cats claws dig into some pretty bad stuff. If you get scratched try to make it bleed, clean it right away, and put some "stuff" on the scratches.
Bink probably maintains his claws pretty well by scratching on trees and stuff.
If you have your pictures loaded at york, go over there and click on a picture so that it shows on your screen. Then with your cursor on the picture, right click. That will bring up a page that at the bottom it will say properties. Click on that, that will bring up another page. In the middle of that page will be the URL address for the picture, copy that, by highlighting it then right click and you will see a page that says copy, click that. Then close out the picture.
Then go to a posting page at either FR or LP and type the following EXCEPT WHERE I USE {} YOU USE THE SIDEWISE TRIANGLE THINGYS:)
{img src=" then paste the url address here then "}
Be sure to put a space between IMG and SRC and be sure to use quotation marks at the beginning and end of the url. If you put in a message be sure to use {P} before and/or after the words, between the picture codes and your message.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, like my couch:) Becky
Had a fantastic trail ride! We started out on an 8 mile loop, went through tall timber and young timber, and some where they were just beginning to log but it was all quiet 'cuz it's Saturday.
Well, we got all the way around the 8 mile loop before we realized we missed a turnoff that would have gone up to see a waterfall that has a good rest stop. Well we were feeling great, horses were doing great so we went around again.... and missed the turnoff again, or rather, we took one, but it was just a different way back, still not leading to the falls. So we missed seeing that today. Have to go again from a different trail head where I ~know~ how to get there. Had a very good long ride, probably 15 miles.
My friend Tiffney is rifing her little Arab mare, ecurbh is riding the chestnut QH.
This was a spot where we stopped to have a candy bar and drink of water break.
