The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Eddie was talking about checking out an adoption ranch but for all my talk today about finding homes I'm not so sure this is a good idea . He is so good with horses but he hasn't rode in a long time and I would think these animals would come with baggage, you know?

I wonder if my horse could opt out on relgious grounds? He's a baptist and we don't believe in this stuff :')

I completely believe none of my horses should have the mark...I'm not going to why should they!!! It'll be the GodFather all over again...all our heads will be in the bed!! lol

I like wool pads and felt cinches. I've had some very bad luck with neoprene stuff. With the fuzzy stuff I think you'd just have to watch that things like stick tights (do you have those there), sand burrs, cockleburrs don't get stuck in it.

They may have baggage, but they also have very overprotective 'sellers' who ought to be very careful about placing horses. You might find somebody there that would be a treasure too.

I LOOK for trails with fallen trees.

there's a fallen tree on that same Kennesaw Battlefield trail that we jumped until it rotted through and fell to the ground. It actually was two fallen trees at a slight angle to each other - made a perfect "bounce" - horse jumps in, swaps front and hind feet with "no stride" and "bounces" right out again. First tree was about a foot off the ground - second tree was about the same distance off the ground but it was One Big Tree - probably about a two or two and a half foot jump.

We loved that jump to death. It's now just a pile of bark and rotten splinters. I've threatened to sneak out there in the dead of night with a saw . . .

Bay is lovely. He seems big in these photos to be a pure Arab--is he crossed with something? I would love to find an Arab big enough to carry my 5-10" without me looking like an idiot.

There is a rescue adoption place located in TX. It is called Lonestar equine rescue, www.lser.org. You can go to thier site and look at thier horses that are adoptable and check them out they have companion only and rideable there are some very nice horses there and they tell you alot about each horse on the site. It is one of the best ones that I have found.

I looked at the pictures again looks like a felt pad??? Felt is good, that would be my second choice on a pad, wool first, but I like felt cinches.

That's good, I had one hatch last night that has stayed curled up rolling around like a ball, but it finally has started straighting out I was beginning to think I was going to have to put it out of its misery.

That will happen if you have let the eggs get a little to cold before you set them. Don't know why. I need some guineas, about 6 of them. We sold everything (fowl) last fall to have less to winter over, now I wish I had kept a few of the guineas, I'll play heck finding 1/2 doz. and they are great for spooky Arabians, if an arabian can handle a guinea, they can handle anything!!! This thread is dominating the Latest list. lol

LOL, go to Tx. You'll jump yourself to death.

Actually, another funny thing about Natrc, they don't want you jumping anything, ditches trees, anything. Jumping costs you points. Haven't figured that one out but didn't mind since I've not jumped and ride in a western saddle anyway. Still considering an English tho:)

My daughter just hatched out around 35 guineas and we are going to get half of those when they get older.
