You got it right big time about the draft.
The media would have a field day with draft card burnings, etc, showing how many were against "war".
With a truth oriented media, and a normal or sane world the draft could be re-instated easily and the dead beat libs who won't put their lives on the line would be ostracized, laughed at and shamed. Unfortunately in our present world, they would be lionized instead of marginaalized.

Well, unfortunately, it is not about politics now, but about our survival as a nation against terrorism.

And another thought about the draft issue. Our President Bush should just meet it head on. He is an honest and sincere man. How 'bout this statement to the press?
We are fighting a war on terrorism on many fronts. We will not give up nor give in. The subject of reinstating the draft has come up and I will address it tonight. We now have enough military, regular and reserve to meet the challenge, and I am proud of their perseverance and courage. But, as I have said, this will be a long war. I have never lied to you about this fact. If necessary, I will ask for more volunteers into regular military, and I do not ask this lightly. I come to you asking that you volunteer to protect your country and family. My last possible choice would be to reinstate the draft, but I know I can count on good men and women to step forward voluntarily. But, if necessary, I will do so.

You make some good points concerning the draft. Unfortunately, there have been and will be times when considerations of how the media might react and whether or not the draft should exist in a free society must be set aside. Nobody likes the thought of sending one's loved one off, involuntarily or otherwise, to war. But sometimes there is no alternative.
As Westy observed, when you need them you need them.
