Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Still round the corner we may meet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

The Swan is a makeover show on Fox that takes 2 women a week, transforms them completely and then one of the two get to go on to a beauty pageant in which one of the them will win the title of "Swan".

I guess it's the whole ugly duckling thing, but I don't like some of the makeovers. They're WAY too obvious. If you're gonna get done up, I think the key is to have folks wonder if you had work done or not.

We had three hits. All of them were people that were traveling outside the firewall, like at home or in a hotel somewhere. They may have been infected when whey connected to the internet, but then they VPN'd into the network and got the updates to the antivirus patterns, which appears to have stopped them. We were able to contact them and get them all patched up.

I don't worry if we only have to handle onesies and twosies. It's the massive network-crashing waves of packets that scare the smuckers outta me.

It's the home networks that really keep me nail-biting. People set up a LAN at home with some gaming machine for the kids that's just knee-deep in worms and viruses, then they take their company machine and use the VPN to bridge over to my network, and suddenly I got barbarians at the gate. [sigh]

Agree wholeheartedly... but I guess if somebody's gonna go on TV for a makeover it might be kinda pointless to try to make folks wonder!

Although, if I ever got something done along those lines, you prolly wouldn't wonder! Good reason for me to do nothing and stay normal!

*scratch* *scratch* *scratch*

No barbarians at the gate today. Good for you.

We were gettin' hit here. Ummmm.... I took the idiot's approach. I unplugged all the computers in the lab from the network. So, that leaves only my office computer and this classroom instructor computer.... Chris said I was good when he left at 4. He'll be back tomorrow for anything else.

When he's gone, I'm in trouble.

Hmmm... Ramius at the bar isn't getting Ruthy a drink. I'll have to do it!

Here ya go Ruthy. Ramius is still having worm nightmares. That's prolly more of a disaster for him than what's on TV tonight.

No, they are not. Especially when they happen "overnight". Yikes!

Still, I can't imagine anything like that I'd want to be shown on a TV show! *shudder*

Dang, Rutheee... I'm sorry to hear that.

The scary thing about Sasser was that the vulnerability was only announced late last week (like Friday). By sometime late Friday night there was already a worm (sasser) that exploited it. Very little time to patch in advance of the worm.

I actually still have some vulnerable servers and desktops that haven't been patched yet. It takes time to get to them all... and actually this patch has to be very carefully applied to some servers because the patch does more damage (in some cases) than the worm does.

In my company, we have made a tactical choice to rely heavily on firewalls and antivirus systems to keep the orcs out, and then take our time to manage patches and updates as we can.

In this case, it was the right choice and it worked pretty well... but I'm not one to get cocky about it. Someday somebody will write the killer worm that takes us all down, and there won't *be* a defense.

You say that like it's a *bad* thing. What're y'all watchin' again? Dang... Suddenly I'm missing out on something. I hate it when that happens. :-)

The scariest part for me was that we supposedly have an awesome firewall and top of the line virus protection, etc - yet, almost half of the building was infected by Monday morning. *shakes head*
