Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Still round the corner we may meet...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Good morning!
Another warm day, though it's supposed to rain later. But thunder storms...which at least are more INTERESTING than regular rain!
And I get to wear my new dress to church. Woo-hoo!

That sounds neat!--I've always wanted to visit there. Be sure to report on that for us! Ok, Carlsbad Caverns report:
We're working at White Sands and staying at Alamogordo this week, but have down time this weekend. "We" consists mainly of native Marylanders (Murl-lenders), one of whom has never been "out west" (he has been to California, but I told him that doesn't count). Everything is small in Murl-lend and very close together. An hours' drive usually puts you in another state.
Well.
Carlsbad is a bit of a drive from Alamogordo- approx 3 hours. Not a big deal if you're a westerner, but it was really interesting to listen to them fuss about driving for so long and "not getting anywhere". They did love the vistas and the vegetation was still green. Partly cloudy, too. It really was lovely.
They also made a lot of derisive comments about the standard of living out here- making fun of the trailer homes and junk cars, speculating on education levels. I decided not to get too grouchy with them about that- their horizons were broadening without a lecture from me.
Anyhoo, Carlsbad Caverns is amazing. It's big, it's beautiful, it's enchanting, it makes you want to be a Park Service Ranger! My colleages have been to a small cave in VA- Luray Caverns- so they thought they'd "done the cave thing". But they admitted CC was "way better than Luray".
There's a scenic drive nearby that they found as interesting as the cave. It was nine miles on a dirt track through the Chihuahuan desert in the Guadelupe Mtns. My colleages were so enchanted with the desert. It was green, the wildflowers were blooming. It warmed my heart.
Today we're going to the Space Museum in Alamogordo and then out to the White Sands monument. (Tho, with all the sand we've eaten the last few days I'm not sure why they want to see more- j/k).

Hmmm. You'll have to fill me in when you get back.
On another subject, I got to argue w/ Al Franken last night. Got it on tape too.

Morning everyone.
I think those Shenandoah caverns are pretty spectacular, so if Carlsbad is "way better," it must be pretty spectacular.

I've never been down to Luray, so I can't say. (hey. That rhymes.) But I'm pretty fond of Carlsbad. There's another set of caverns near Tucson, Collossal Caves, that are open for touring. Latest speculation is that it is the same rock formation as Carlsbad and all the cavers were a'twitter about the two caverns connecting. I doubt that they are, but who knows.

their horizons were broadening without a lecture from me. They'd be positively agog if they spent any time in the MS Delta!

SSQ and I were watching the movie The Missisng last night (would recommend it, btw), and I said I'd love to go back West on vacation again. We've been to AZ, MT and WY, but would love to go to NM!! I made that comment before I even find out the movie was actually shot in NM! The scenery was gorgeous!

There's quite a few of 'em SW from Luray, going on down the Shenandoah Valley, I guess the rock conditions are right.
We were in Weir's Cave, near Staunton, a few years ago, showed up on opening day in the spring. No one else but us even showed up, so we got a private tour of the thing, which was nice.
I thought it spectacular.
It had been discovered 200 or so years ago, I think even Thos Jefferson had gone in it to look around. It's still out in the middle of nowhere, pretty much.

Excellent summary of the outstanding work you're doing. The HH knife is quite a fine item. Thanks for your efforts, I'm sure the troops feel so as well.

Mornin' LF; Was there many years back was quite impressed with the place. Glad you all enjoyed it. "3 hours", that's 'just down the road a bit' out there. :-)
Sam: enjoyed the pic of Bimini, sounds like a nice place to visit (when the weather cooperates). Been delving into the 'Aubrey et al' sailing series; quite a few to read, the library is well stocked with them.

Morning All; at the office yesterday but regained my equilibrium after we had babyback ribs at the Hickory Pit, Hmmmmm. Supposed to be 35 tonight, but, in typical Midwestern fashion, 88 by mid week. Gypsy has been walked, the paper perused and the posts caught up. Second crop of Iris getting ready to bloom, the hostas, freed from over 50 extra dafodills, are breathing more easily now. All the trimmed rose-of-sharons are putting out new growth. The Weigela is in bloom.
Hair; can't believe the CD music set for LOTR will have NINE cd's, well I guess that is one way to have 200 percent increase in my CD collection. :-)
OT: good luck at the arboretum sale. Got a daylily with your name on it, been trying to scope out a little shingle oak for you, but haven't found a good one yet.
Corin; ticks, amazing little creatures, they are. Have often wondered about the role they play, haven't figured it out yet. :-)

Excellent summary of the outstanding work you're doing. The HH knife is quite a fine item. Thanks for your efforts, I'm sure the troops feel so as well. Thanks, but I thing I'm getting a bit too obsessive. I may need to seek help.
I'm getting this uneasy feeling that I should be sending along a 2mm hex wrench, a tube of Loctite, and some sort of flat hone with each knife, so they can be kept in perfect condition. These are quality knives that are given all the TLC I can think of, but sometimes it seems I should be doing more.
I know that's totally neurotic, but WN's salsa, candy, etc. has to be perfect only long enough to be eaten. I want our knives to be in perfect condition for at least one lifetime. Is there any group out there like Obsessives Anonymous?
