Hehehe. I was watching a Mister Ed DVD the other week. Wilbur's neighbor made a slighting remark about the horse and Mr. Ed popped him upside the head with his tail. For some reason, it reminded me of your horses.

Don't see what's so great about Chaplin. I think Buster and Harold Lloyd are funnier....and Laurel and Hardy.

Der Golem? (no relation to Gollum, LOL!) That's another one made about the same time as
Nosferatu I like.
I've thought of the Chaney/Cheney thing too, LOL! I was glad to see the TCM restoration of London After Midnight they showed recently--that was his spookiest make-up, IMO. I also like his non-horror stuff--Unholy Three and Laugh, Clown, Laugh are a couple they show fairly often.

Yeah, I've seen it...but it's been a long time. For a minute there I was getting it confused with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

Don't see what's so great about Chaplin. I think Buster and Harold Lloyd are funnier....and Laurel and Hardy.Agree; although I don't know what comedy was like before Chaplin so maybe he was a step forward from something else. I have like a dozen Chaplin tapes I picked up on sale but still haven't watched all of them as I don't find them that funny; whereas once I discovered Keaton I couldn't watch his movies fast enough. Lloyd's Safety Last! is great. Harry Langdon is also funny. I've only seen a few Laurel and Hardys but they've all been good--saw Hardy in an early John Wayne movie once, too :) And then I love the Marx Brothers :)

For a minute there I was getting it confused with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.LOL! Yeah, that's another one that makes me think of, although I never thought that was very scary, just weird. Let's see, another German silent horror I've seen is Student of Prague. I guess there were some German ETA Hoffmann adaptations I haven't seen yet which I'd like to. On the American side I've seen some early Poe adaptations and clips from a couple silent versions of Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I also like the early French SF films by George Melies which verge on horror in some ways, esp. A Trip to the Moon and Conquest of the Pole. He did quite a few horror films apparently (Georges Melies Filmography)though I'm not sure how many have survived. I used to get to watch some of these films in a theater at a museum which recreated downtown Milwaukee in the early 1900s. You could go in and pay like a nickel and they'd show Caligari and Nosferatu and Melies and the Keystone Cops stuff like that in this old-fashioned movie theater.

They show
A Trip to the Moon fairly often when they're covering the history of SF or horror on TCM. There were several different silent versions of
Dr. Jekyll; the one they show clips of most often is one I've never seen in its entirety which looks really good starring John Barrymore:

(When I posted that pic I noticed the bottom of the box mentions it includes a Stan Laurel spoof called Dr. Pyckle and Mr. Pride--ROFL! I've gotta see that :)

How was it? The makeup looked pretty creepy. Kinda reminded me of Henry Hull's makeup in
Werewolf of London which is another one I like:

I was under the impression that Barrymore didn't use special makeup for that movie....just facial expressions and a major bad hair event. But then, that might be just an urban legend.
