The Hobbit Hole VIII - Still round the corner we may meet...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Still round the corner we may meet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

We have TONS of them here. There's one field I go past on the way to the "big city" of Littleton, NH where I swear there are always DOZENS of 'em.

Sometimes I wish I knew how ta shoot. I bet they're tasty.

How many times have you read LotR, then? I try to read it once a year. Used to read The Hobbit twice in a row sometimes :)

There's a flock of about 50-100 turkeys that lives in the woods near here. They're out in the backyard every day. They were mating a few weeks ago so the males were out preening and the females were ignoring them, or at least pretending to, LOL!

Over a dozen times. First read it when I was 11, have read it at least once a year since, several years two or three times.

I used to start my re-read every September 22nd!

I'll find out more about the "Hymns in my Heart" program this Sunday...I'll get back with ya.

So...are you ready to be added to my homeschool ping list? I have about 200 people! :-)

It can't come too soon as far as I'm concerned! ;o)

I told my mom the other day that I was thinking about running again...she told me "You can't run after you have babies...all your female parts will fall out!"

I told her if they did, I'd give 'em a good swift kick and keep running!

Cool :) I've been rereading it over Christmas the past few years. September and October I usually reread horror stories to get in the Halloween spirit.

I think one reason I read The Hobbit so much is because I had an illustrated version and I was always drawing the pictures. For art class assignments I mostly drew pictures of Bilbo, the goblins, or Smaug; or else comic-book characters.

Hey, you're the nice person who invited me here! :) I really love poppers. Actually I love most stuff with hot peppers.

200? Wow. I didn't know there were so many of us on FR.

We are the homeschoolers. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. Teachers' unions are irrelevant.

Ha ha ha!!!

Really, I don't know how many actually homeschool...some might actually be grandparents of homeschoolers, some may be considering it...

I started with a few people a long time ago (way before the Hobbit Hole) and it's just kept building and building. I added 3 people just yesterday.

I wish I could ask ecurb if he would make me a nice graphic to use when I ping people...with something like "If you want on or off my Homeschool ping list, please freep mail me!"

But I'm too shy to ask him...

Yes, sort of. The guy called me at work and we have arranged for him to call me at home Sunday. He needs 1/2 or 3/4 hour with me...if that goes well we schedule a time for me to go down to Houston for more screening.

Remember the story of Gideon's fleece? Mine is that, if this is not the Lord's will, I will not be invited to Houston, because if I do, I'll put my current job in jeopardy if not lose it outright.

What kind of educational software is popular among homeschoolers? I have some ideas on educational software, based on some ideas Isaac Asimov suggested in an essay on applying computers to education combined with my own ideas, but I need to do some market research to see what's already out there.

Eee... that depends on the homeschooler! My family used very little educational software. Mom preferred books. We had educational games.

In general, foreign-language tutoring software is popular... I've seen people use math-drill software. I'd look at a homeschool supply catalog - I think there are plenty of those online.

Thanks--I'll give you some more details after I check into what you suggest. I'm also interested in software for reading, history, and science.

Science, definitely a market. Not so sure on reading and history - a lot of homeschoolers I know like a history textbook.

Remember, homeschoolers can be a verrrry conservative lot. I'm on the 'liberal' side of that scale, I read SF and am a woman with (shock!) a professional, career job.

But, computers are one thing most homeschoolers (except the Amish!) have accepted.

I'll have to think about how to crack the Amish market :) But reading and history aren't as popular as math and science, though?

Matthew used a program called "Switched on Schoolhouse"...I really liked it but he wasn't developementally ready for it. (He's a 4th grader in a 2nd grader body.)

Alpha Omega puts it out...
