Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Still round the corner we may meet...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Too bad the whey powder's expensive--those sound good! Hmm, wonder if there's something cheaper you could substitute for whey powder. . .
As for giving up bread, I'd hate to give up bread!--I love bread :) Actually I use bread as a substitute when I'm tempted to eat potato chips or something like that.

A mill for homemade flour sounds like a great idea! How much room does that take in the garden to grow the grain?

Congratulations! :)

Here is Rick, seated...the only picture I can find of him on the web...the play is called "God's Man in Texas". I have no idea what it's about, it was put on at Stages Repertory Theatre.

I haven't seen him since we were kids, just out of school, so this picture was a bit of a shock...but it's him!

I'll have to try out the cheesecake, I think. I know you've posted it before, but I wasn't paying attention!
Another simple, one-serving dessert the book recommends is just half a cup of ricotta with 1/2 to 1 tsp cocoa powder, a packet of Splenda, and a few almond slivers mixed in. Sounds good to me...

That does sound tasty! Recipe? :) Hm...I don't really use recipes except for baking, so I dunno!
As far as the diet goes, what vegetables are restricted on the South Beach Diet?
Mostly they just don't allow starchy vegetables. And carrots are out for the first phase...I think they get added back later. White potatoes are pretty much out for good except as a treat, though you're allowed sweet potatoes in small amounts.

I'm in the middle of packing, or I'd run get it. But you can take any cheesecake recipe and substitute the sugar. In mine, I increase the lemon so I can use less Splenda. I've also discovered the joys of baked custard- again with Splenda. It's an awesome dessert AND a yummy breakfast when served w/ berries or fruit.
Ok, back to packing...

Mmm...Mom used to make custard for us, years ago. I think she stopped when all the fuss about eggs being bad for you was at its peak. The younger kids don't even remember it.
I LIKE that idea. Could even top with Splenda whipped cream and blueberries for an extra special treat.

I'd have a hard time on that diet, 'cause potatoes is one of my favorite foods! BTW, did Gollum design the recipe?--"The Dr. Smeagol Diet Plan: no nasty taters!--only eats nice fish, raw and wriggling--see how much weight we loses on it!" :)
To: RosieCotton
Yummmhmmmhmmm!
My grandmother used to make it for us, and for some reason I decided I didn't like it. So I never gave it another thought until I bought a nice stoneware bakeware set. It had 4 ramekins. I *had* to break 'em in so... voila custard! And it was good! Whodathunkit.

Someone gave me a set of ramekins a few years ago, so I'm all ready for if and when I wanna make some.
I always liked it! She would sprinkle a little nutmeg on top...I can taste it now.
One of these days I'll have to see if I can find the recipe she used to use.

Potatoes are gonna be one of the hardest things to give up for me, too...especially if I go home for dinner on Sundays. We eat a LOT of potatoes and pasta!
Fish is highly recommended on this diet plan, as a matter of fact. Hm...
They do tell you to cook it, though. ;-)

Cook nice raw fish? Not listening!
Hmmm--I wonder if there are ways to prepare potatoes that get rid of some of the starches? Like making them into hash browns or something, maybe. In Norway they make a type of potato bread called lefsa which seems to be pretty healthy.
To: RosieCotton
Oh yeah, about the grain mill...I got off on a tangent remembering my old pals in Houston!
I don't have a grain mill...I ground some in my coffee mill and it did ok, but Bob's Red Mill is just the best texture I've ever used...as smooth as talc. And it's reasonably priced...

Actually, supposedly the more broken down the potatoes are, the worse they are for you...so hashbrowns are about the worst. According to that book, in any case! The more broken down they are already, the faster the sugar (or starch converted to sugar) ends up in your bloodstream.
I'll probably just have potatoes now and then when I get down to where I want to be weight-wise. I can't see that having them once in awhile will hurt much, so long as they aren't a huge part of my diet.

Hair: Those guys from Tumwater... I don't remember them, at least not right off the top of my head.
Ya gotta wonder if twins wouldn't make a really, really effective scout/sniper team.

Well, the article did say that they actually finished high school somewhere else, but they were at Tumwater from gradeschool up through somewhere in high school....
Twins were notable enough that I remember a couple sets, but not those guys.
Not much on the agender here.
