That's interesting! I didn't know there were two subgenres, but that makes sense. Most of the Japanese cartoons I've seen have probably fallen into the shonen category. I'll have to pay attention to the big eyes thing and see if any of the anime on now is shoujo. And yeah, I know to avoid the hentai.
I like Black Stallion okay. I agree more girls read it but I don't think it's necessarily girlish--at the age it's written for I think boys and girls tend to read a lot of the same stuff still.
Scanning something in I just drew for you--will send it in a few minutes.

It's quirky!
It strikes me that it would make for a good scene in a book.

I had a couple of sparrows show up this afternoon.

Hmm... last issues of "1602" and "Avengers/JLA", which were good. Latest issue of "H-E-R-O", which was very good.
Still reading!

The eye thing is not a hard and fast rule, just since shoujo manga usually is more about feelings and such, they need to express more.
I always preferred boys' books. They got spaceships and swords, and girls got 'realistic' stories about sibling rivalry and fashion disasters.

Hi Ruthy!!!
My bike broke down on the way home. *sigh* I had to be rescued.
Fortunately, he was incredibly tall and good looking! :-)
And I made it home safely!
Any adventure from which you make it home safely is a good adventure, even if it contains an adverse condition.
But, rescue by a good looking guy somewhat offsets an adverse condition too! :-D

"1602" is an 8-issue limited series, written by Neil Gaiman. A time anomaly has caused many heroes from the Marvel Universe to appear "early", in the Elizabethan England of 1602 A.D. The anomaly will also eventually destroy reality, unless it can be stopped.
The story was interesting in a "What If" kind of way... but I can't shake the feeling that Marvel may be trying to establish a new line of books. I wonder how long it will be before they start publishing regular titles set in the "1602" universe....

For some reason, I find this oddly intriguing. For some reason, so do I. ;~D

I think maybe in general, boys' writing is stronger on action, girls' is stronger on drama. My goal in my fiction is to combine the two so it appeals to readers of both genders. I tried to do that in my novel by adding the romantic subplot to the horror/action theme. It was the first time I've tried that, so hopefully as I practice it'll get easier.
