Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Still round the corner we may meet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Good Afternoon All; the first tri-state mini-moot has come to an end. We picked up RMDurpree this a.m. and gave her a mini tour of town. Unbeknownst to her, she was actually in KS last night.

It was beautiful day today, with a nice breeze. Redbuds and dogwoods were in bloom. The midday repast was well attended by those present. KC babybackribs, burntends, and sausage were consumed in massive quantities. I believe there was a Guiness on the table at sometime during the meal.

All too quickly the sand trickled through the hourglass, OT returned to her test tubes, and we dropped off RMD at the next festivity and we returned to the 'shire'.

Till we all meet again.

Then again... does the lack of a B&N correspond to, say, fewer strip malls and other nuisances?

Exactly! :) I figure I've already got 2000+ books or so to keep me occupied, I can afford to trade less visits to B&N for no strip malls!

Thanks for the report on the mini-Moot! Glad it went well. Had a Guiness myself last night, so that part sounds good, too :)

I watch/read very few dark comics. I'm still getting past my 'comics are for kids' and 'comics are silly' mentality.

Gonna eat supper now, back in a bit.

Alas, that would have required greater pre-planning efforts than we were able to muster. The word pictures will have to suffice. :-)

Re: Military Funeral (Dis) Honors

Dear Mr. Johnson,

I’m writing on behalf of my wife, [Msdrby], and her family. We lay to rest her grandfather, Mr. O.J. Johnson, this past Wednesday, 31March. Mr. Johnson was a US Navy veteran, having served honorably aboard the USS Belle Isle (AG-73) during World War 2 and for some period in the Navy Reserve after his discharge from active duty.

Having served honorably, Mr. Johnson was entitled to Military Honors at his funeral service. The Honor Guard did not show up for the funeral. To the best of my knowledge, the Honor Guard had been contacted in sufficient time to plan for this funeral. Mr. Johnson did have a flag for his casket.

At the conclusion of the service, the funeral director and Mr. Johnson’s brother Oran folded the flag. My wife and I, each a fellow veteran, along with the family in attendance were very disappointed to not have the Honor Guard available for this sacred task. We sorely missed the rifle salute and the playing of Taps as well.

I do not know where the Honor Guard detail was scheduled to come from, but would like to learn what happened. The entire family has some bitter feelings about this perceived dishonor for a fallen hero.

Respectfully,

[Professional Engineer]

The following is an update.

FOLLOW-UP TO PART I

I spoke with the Director of Constituent Services from the congressman's office. His initial thought was the funeral director dropped the ball on the whole thing.

Additionally, he told me that a MILITARY Honor Guard was not guaranteed for a Veteran's funeral. HUH?? This is contrary to what myself, [Msdrby] and other vets whom we know where told.

Darby succeeded in reaching the funeral director's boss, and learned the following:

The request was faxed by Mr. Smith to CDR, Naval Reserve Command, New Orleans at 9:11am on Sunday, 28 MAR 2004. There was a return fax from NRC, New Orleans at 9:22 am on the same day.

Confirmation POC: AO1 Burkhalter (possibly from JRB Fort Worth)
Fax Number: 817-782-6273

FOLLOW-UP TO PART II

Both [Msdrby] and I spoke with Mr. Durham regarding this new information. His reply was along the line of, "This certainly changes things." He informed us the congressman's office will be looking into the matter for us.

We'll see what comes up.

Maybe we can all come to celebrate your first anniversary?

Hm...wonder if I'd be able to keep my job if I took the time to busk my way to the wedding...

Does busking involve beckoning passers-by from streetcorners? ;~D
