Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Still round the corner we may meet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I would think about fencing again and leave the dogs out during the day...

Erk...dunno if I could do that. It would be very costly, for one, and I'd be paranoid about them digging out. Might be something to do with the NEXT place I have, or in coming years...but probably not something I could do without major help, in any case.

*sigh*

I'm thinkin' I gotta just find him a new home, but I hate to do that to him...he seems very happy having a sister to play with and plenty of attention.

I wish I had more of a yard. It'd almost be easier to fence if I had a decent sized yard. As it is...if I add any more to the area, the plow will destroy it every winter.

Best walking weather is high fifties or low sixties, I'd say.

Brrrrr.... I don't think about wanting to walk till it's over 75! And I really enjoy it a lot even up into the triple digits. I like getting out in warm weather! Very refreshing! :-)

Somehow, I knew we'd have different perspectives on that! :-)

I wish I were there.... I could get you a fence built.... and not too much money.

They are little dogs.... They don't need that much room, not worth risking the plow. I would get a sturdy mesh fence that they can't bend and bury it six inches to be sure it has good contact with the ground. I have a little electric fence charger (called a "Fido-shock, lol!) I'd send you if you thought you needed it. I love fences that you are sure they won't push... and electric does that for you. One wire around the perimeter six inches from the fence and you know they won't dig under.

What's the square footage on those?

Grr...the problem is that I have NO big square of level ground...even the place that's fenced in now isn't level, and it's not very well done. I'm not good at working alone, and don't have anyone that could help. Can't ask brothers...they sorta helped me with the current area, but very reluctantly, and it shows.

Though...even now it's starting out in the 20's and 30's...just can't imagine putting a near coatless dog out all day in that.

On the bright side, there at least wasn't a puddle when I got home today. Was the other thing, though. Wish he cared enough to be neat, but I think that's been programmed outta dachshunds.

Gotta say...as amusing and cute as they are, I will never have another dachshund. Probably will never have another small dog, period.

Re: the heat thing...I suppose if there were TWO of them and a decent dog house or an insulated box of some sort...they'd be OK?

Those kennels are usually 6 or 8 feet by 10 or 12.

They would need a level spot.... or a spot made level with fill (gravel?)

I know the cold is more of an issue there. Heat lamp in their dog house? Oh yeah.... electricity!

Cute kids! They'll need a bigger kennel than Rosie's pups.

Me neither. Smeagol was Myranda's choice for a dog anyway, but I sure don't want another dachshund. I am much more inclined to have someone of larger proportions.

Since I'm not near to see them grow it always surprises me to get the pictures! What shocked me about this one is that he's got his head held up! Mentally, I know he's old enough, but when I saw him, he was just so far from that! :-)

Well, their new on-base family "kennel" is a 5 bedroom, 2 story number with a large yard. That should be sufficient for 'em! :-)

Oh yeah! And they got a dog last month!!!

Nice handsome lot, those kids. Though they look very mischievous, wonder where they could have got traits like that?

Ugh, long day and it's not over yet. But it's sunny! And it's warm!

It'd be nice if you could get a dog with a big dog sorta personality, only smaller...but then there's the tiny bladder thing, too.

But these guys are just soooooo frustrating...'cause they don't give a darn what you want 'em to do...or don't want 'em to do. And no amount of coaxing or scolding will make any difference.

I swear...I know it's a very cruel thing to say, but there are some days when I'm tempted to get rid of even Fiona and get an adult Lab or Lab / Shepherd or something along those lines.

On the positive side...just spent the last fifteen minutes giving Fritzi his first lesson in walking on a leash. I'd completely forgotten that he didn't have a clue about such things. He's wayyy more eager to please than Fiona and really did put his little heart into it, though the leash freaked him out a bit. We'll do another lesson tomorrow, but he was getting so he understood to stay with me and on my left. He's not as dim as I sometimes think he is. And he was so happy to be praised! I swear...he would even wag his tail with it between his legs at the house, for some reason. Not like they'd ever been mean to him or anything...but he's been holding it higher the last few days.
