Heh, you got that right. Yeah I never thought courtship as presented in lectures I listened to at homeschooling conventions in the early 90's was practical. I live thousands of miles from my folks and while I really value their opinion on the subject bringing someone home to meet the folks is not exactly convenient. I don't date in general. Mainly because I don't meet many women with much potential and the ones I do meet live very far away. So basically I HAVE to put my trust on the subject in God because random chance ain't going to do it.

Heh, I remember sitting through a couple seminars and thinking, "Ok, I'll do this and this, but not this..." some of the ideas seemed ridiculous! Like, don't ever allow the couple to be alone. So they're never going to have a private conversation before they get married?

Of course, most of the homeschoolers doing this marry off young. I'm practically an old maid. But... if the daughter goes off a thousand miles and meets someone, is the dad going to fly in and give the boy a hard time?

Very few of the people at the conferences had courted, themselves. That's why Joshua Harris is one of the few speakers I respect, and he seemed to have a more 'moderate' approach to courtship. Dating, as it is practiced today, doesn't work well. I think the valuable idea behind courtship is that it should be to discover whether the two people are suited for marriage, rather than whether you can have a good time.
