I've always been afraid that bleach would eat through the thread.

You could try one of those non-bleach whiteners. Clorox 2, is a peroxide based cleaner. Oxy Clean sounds like a peroxide based cleaner, too, but like Wneighbor said, it may be TOO strong.

Hey! I had forgotten peroxide Suzy! Sometimes you can just use regular peroxide from the bottle on spots and they come out.

Thanks for the suggestions. We've just been too skeered to do anything. When I figger out where we've stored it, I'll take a picture and show you what I mean.
