That is true, toss in the regional variations, it can hard to please everyone. I've had a few in northern AZ and NM that were waaayy diff than anything from TX or elsewhere. Had some smoked chub chili in Wisconsin once, now that was different.

I think barbecue (barbeque?) is still a more heated subject...at least in other parts of the country. People here call anything cooked outside "barbecued"...so doesn't apply here. ;-)
