It's never wrong.

Actually, Computerworld.com has a pretty good salary survey. I have used it before to justify salaries.

Mainly it depends on where you are. Regional differences are huge, but then again so are the differing costs of living.

But the salad days are over for IT salaries. We got away with pure murder in the late 90's because there just weren't enough people to fill the jobs. I was giving 10% and 20% raises AND bonuses back then just to keep good people.

Unfortunately, lots of idiots and whackjobs ended up making just obscene money. But that is being squeezed out now, and rightfully so. In the long run it will be healthy.

Heh, isn't that the truth... I'm not looking to get my doctorate because of the money, but man, the money there is still nice. Our segment isn't that bad, and my job is really worth more than what they pay me, but... it pays my bills, and they can't pay me any more right now anyway.

Maybe in May I can get a raise.

According to that survey, I'm makin' literally half the average.

Oh well. I think my plan as of this moment is to hold on until June and see if I get a decent raise. If I don't, I may be forced to find something else. I really hope that doesn't happen, 'cause I work with a great group, have a great boss, and just generally enjoy the heck out of that position.
