Nice painting. Usually when I hear art of that period discussed I hear more about the French impressionists and postimpressionists, but I guess there were still a number of realists in France as well, as that painting illustrates. BTW the style there reminds me somewhat of 17th-century Dutch style, which I like.

Speaking of which, I just got done reading a really neat book by a Dutch painter done in a sort of neo-realist style:

Rien Poortvliet, Journey to the Ice Age: Mammoths and Other Animals of the Wild

The author goes in his backyard, where he found some prehistoric hunting tools, and visualizes what it would have been like to be a hunter in the Ice Age and what the wildlife then would have looked like. A really worthwhile book if you like naturalistic art.

I did really like Journey to the Center of the Earth

I remember the movie that was done many years ago. I loved the scene where they're standing on the shore of the sea that is inside the earth. Maybe it's because I saw the movie near to when the song was released, but Donovan's "Sunshine Superman" always reminds me of that scene. I love that song!

What's the red hat society, Suzi?

It is for women 50 and older. It came about because of a line in a poem, that goes something like "When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn't match." There are groups all over now of women who just like to get together with the girls to go out to lunch, shows, etc. If you are under 50, you have to wear lavender with a pink hat.

I'm going to need a new winter coat next year, so I'll just have to get myself a purple one, and a red hat!

Yes, it's a pretty large book and looks expensive. I was lucky that our library, which is very small, happened to have a copy. Very inspiring book. I'm anxious to read some of his other books now--he's done quite a few, Gnomes being the most famous.
