The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

You think working at McDonalds' means making the big bucks...
For years and years, my husband's home town's city council wouldn't allow McDonald's to build a restaurant there. They were afraid it would attract the "wrong sort" to town ...!

Your snowmobile costs more than your kid's college education...
Your best clothes are reversible; Blaze Orange to Camouflage...
You know 37 ways to prepare meals from roadkill...
Your idea of deer hunting is driving down the logging roads in your 4 wheel drive WITHOUT your gun...
Your summer shirts are plaid wool (same as your winter shirts)...
You have more insurance on your snowmobile than your car...
My in-laws.

Your local record store still has brand new 8 track tapes for sale...
Not the record store --- Iron River is too small for a record store --- but I'll bet the Holiday has 8-tracks!

You think that Iron Mountain is a prime example of a big city in urban decay...
Yes! Da Bear thinks exactly that! Every time we drive through Iron Mountain, I always remark on the bustling retail district, and all he does is complain about the blight!

Being a "Red Wing fan" means you like their new line of hiking boots...
Reminds me of another brother-in-law; he works at Ace Hardware (not Pamida).

You think the phrase "It's all down hill from here" is an advertisement for the local Ski Lodge...
Caspian! Ski Brule!

Your telephone number has 3 digits...or less...
Da Bear says until the early Nineties his hometown only had to dial 5 digits: 5-xxxx. Nowadays, you have to dial the whole 265-xxxx. Bummer!

Your car phone is a rotary model with a loooooong cord...
My mother-in-law's main phone is still the black rotary phone!

You think the sign in every bar that says NO MINORS SERVED is occupationally biased...
Dina Mia pizzas and pasties!

Your local movie theater is offering "Gone With The Wind" as a first run feature presentation...
The Iron River theater (two screens) is habitually six weeks of releases behind Austin ... I don't know that they ever showed the Ring trilogy.

Your favorite band is Da Yoopers...
Oh, help me ... Da Yoopers are sooooo odd!

Oops... was off packing troop packages! Didn't see the post!

Glad you've got one of the guys from Phoenix there with ya!
So, I bet it's nice and warm in Phoenix. Tucson is lookin' to be a lot better option for me to move in the near future after my day at work today! :-)

Thanks! Sometimes when replying I don't retain the formatting of the original to save keystrokes, but I do need to brush up on my html. I know some of the basic commands, but the three things I feel most lacking in are how to retain formatting when cutting and pasting; how to embed html links; and how to attach/link jpgs. I'll check out the link you gave and see what it says about how to do that.

Rosie, I know you like mysteries, and a little science fiction --- may I recommend the J. D. Robb In Death series?

Haven't heard that song, but the title reminds me of the bar down the road which is just down from the bridge where everyone fishes when they're not going hunting, LOL!

ROFL! Sounds like how it is by my Dad's parents, too :) By the way, on the theater thing, we fortunately got a second theater recently. It only has a few screens so it's sometimes behind on movies that aren't #1 at the box office, but they did manage to get ROTK on time. It was always sold out the three times I went, and it was still showing there through at least late January. One time I went it seemed like half the kids in town had to be there. When I went to the library recently there were two kids there aged about 5 and 7 talking about "Frodo and Sam", LOL!

Found it!

Beer, Bait, and Ammo
(Kevin Fowler)

Well now early one day, I was on my way, to my favorite fishin’ hole
I was thinking I could sure use another bottle of booze
My baits a’ runnin' a little low
And a box of 12 gauge would be all the rage
When I’m all liquored up and I'm feelin’ good
Well just down the road there was a place called Bubba’s
Man he’s got the goods

(chorus)
And the sign said beer, bait, and ammo, yeah
They got everything in between
Yeah they got anything any old beer drinkin'
Hell raisin', bona fide redneck needs
They got your fishin' hooks, they got your dirty books
They got your rebel flag on the wall
The sign said beer, bait, and ammo, yeah
You ask me they got it all!

Well now when I walked in I can’t even begin
To describe just what I smelled
Lord, was it the catfish bait, or something Bubba had ate
Was it those pickled eggs on the shelf
Yeah with a toothless grin he said, "boy step right on in
Make yourself right at home!" I said, "no, no, no thank you man
Just a 12 pack of cans, and I’ll be good to go!"

(repeat chorus)

solo

(repeat chorus)

I may want to check that out, too. I won't ask you to give the plot away, but may I ask, what type of mystery is it?--is there any other writer's work you would compare it to? One reason I ask is because my Mom likes certain types of mysteries also and I'm wondering if it's something she'd like. She used to be into Agatha Christie and Nero Wolfe but lately she's more into true crime kind of stuff along "CSI" lines. Myself, I tend to like Dashiell Hammett and film noir type of stuff.

It's a country song; Kevin Fowler is a local Texas guy, who does the best version of it IMHO. However, Sammy Kershaw did a version of it on his latest album and released it as a single, so his version is probably better known (outside of Texas, anyway!)

Not exactly mysteries, but police procedurals featuring New York Police and Security Department's Lieutenant Eve Dallas and the oh-so-sexy and mysterious multi-gazillionaire Roarke (one name only). They're set in the year 2050, and are a great ride. But they are gritty crime novels --- lots of blood, gore, death and sex.
