Cakes shaped like weapons? Heh...that should be interesting!

Probably things like that which make the public skool folks upset about lettin' 'em meet there...

I guess that means he can progress on to Webelos, and that everything from now on is just fluff (Arrows of Light, Symbols of Faith badge, ect.)

Heh...

...the den leader (that I clash with) forgot to mention my name when she thanked the individual "banquet committee" people, for which she later apologized profusely and my response was "That's ok...I was just helpin' out, didn't even realize I was on the committee!"

Yes, but now she owes you one. ;-)

Still, I'm not sure...do you know? I mean, is that all that is required to be a Webelo?

I have no idea, I'm so ignorant! I just took this over from Steve not knowing diddly about it!

And as far as the committee business goes, I was just trying to be helpful, didn't know they'd stuck me on a committee! Any time the lady needed help, if I could, I'd volunteer.

I don't like to clash...I really don't, despite my box-fan reputation...

Hey, I could get into that Chariots of Fire thing!

Did I ever tell you that we had missionary friends who were in prison in China with Eric Liddle?

What, exactly, is a Webelo? It sounds like some sort of high-tech robot toy, to me... is it just the next rank or group or what?

I think you may have mentioned that, which is very cool!

I think it stands for "We'll be Loyal". It's just the next rank in scouts. Between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.

I think. Gosh, I feel moronic when it comes to this.

Kinda the stage between rank Cub Scouts and real Boy Scouts.

None of my brothers did the Cub Scout thing, though...they all waited and went straight into regular scouts. Downside of that is that you start from scratch where badges are concerned, and it's tougher to make Eagle. Only one brother made Eagle.

I'd have to go back and look. But it's similar in progression. There are things he can do and earn as a Bear that will help him move on to Webelo.

None of my brothers did scouting. We're not really group-people and I guess my mother figured it would just be one thing more.

So I'm enjoying reading about your adventures in Scouting, 2J!

Well, now that he's GOT the Bear rank, I feel a bit like the pressure is off...now we can relax and work on the extras as we please. This lady really cracked the whip behind us to get this done. I didn't want Matthew to be the only one in his troop that didn't make rank last night! (I imagine every mom felt the same way, ha ha!)

He even TYPED up a short report about hypnotism! Researched it and everything.

We didn't do a lot of group stuff...but for the most part, the Boy Scouts are a great organization. Unfortunately there are too many women involved with the local troup now, IMO. Used to be the Cubs were run by the moms...but the Dads and big brothers ran the Boy Scouts. It was very definitely a guy thing, and I think that was really good for the boys. Now there are lots of women, and not only that but instead of being a learning experience, it's more and more a competition, especially among the mothers...to push their kids to make rank as quickly as possible kinda to show each other up.

I'm being overly cynical...but it isn't the way it used to be.

I was realllly jealous of my brothers, I must say! Girl Scouts is nothing like Boy Scouts, and I didn't have anything equivalent to be part of.

That's true. The books spell things out pretty well.

Jr. did Cub Scouts up thru Webelos and about the first year of scouting. There were issues though with the troop we chose to go to. We switched and that was no better. We eventually dropped it because we had enough other stuff going on.

Our church denomination has a scouting program called "Royal Rangers." They meet as the regular Wednesday evening program for boys (girls have a similar program). We'll send Luke through that.

I would have hated Girl Scouts. At that age I had nothing in common with other girls. I'd have rather joined the Boy Scouts, too... oh well. I did play softball until my inherent lack of talent forced me to stop.

The Assemblies of God churches I attended used the same program as what you mentioned. My mom made me participate in the girls' program for a while until I was smart-alecky enough that she realized I was bored out of my skull.. the girls' program was all making little crafts - which I hated - or learning really basic bible stories that we'd had in Sunday School three times already.

Also the other girls all went to the same school and decided I was going to be the "outsider" to their little group.

I understand the boys' program was signifigantly better.

Girl Scouts...there are good troops, but the one here was run by raging feminists who were eager to mold young girls in their own image. Ick.

I was pretty lonely a lot of the time when I was a young teenager...my brothers had scouts, but by that time most of the girls I knew got wayyyy into boys - and not as just people to hang out and play stuff with. And clothes and makeup and boy bands and...well, I just didn't have anything in common with 'em! I hung out with the boys when they let me, and I did have a few good friends that I saw once in awhile (one of them the girl who just got married...and is expecting a baby in May!), but I did a lot of wandering around in the woods alone, training my dog, and reading and writing. Wasn't so bad, I guess, now that I think back on it! But I did envy my brothers at times.

Jr. didn't fit with the program at church. So the mom of a friend who also didn't fit would take them and do things on Wednesday nights. Part of Jr's problem was that we were already doing a lot of the same stuff in cub scouts. And, since they meet at the same time as choir, his mom and I were less involved.

Luke will take the place by storm.
