The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

ecurbh and I were walking my Dad around the back forty today, showin him the new fence and he was looking for trees to cut for firewood, and ecurbh sees this hole in the ground, looks at first like a rabbit hole till we swept away the dirt.
He says... "Ummm.... there is a big problem here"
Explain this to me. Somebody buried a 55-gallon drum. up-side down. Empty.
Bad things happen to a horse that steps in that. It is hard to tell the depth in the pictures (I should have stood in it) but it is nearly the whole drum deep. You can see both rings in the sides in the next pictures.
(Looking through the hole)
We dug around enough to know that it was going to be a huge job to dig it all the way out with one shovel to our name. So I cut the bottom (top?) out with the sawz-all and we filled it in place.
It is at least safe now.... Will keep an eye out for erosion or packdown where we might need to fill more over it.

that's creepy...why would someone do that?

And I get chewed out. Sheesh. Yeah, pretty much.
To: PurpleQ
Other than for putting a body in, I can't think of one. And it was empty!
To: HairOfTheDog
Maybe a covered-up outhouse hole?
Maybe a body buried in the bottom?
Wow...that is wierd.

They worked hard to bury it there too.....
To: HairOfTheDog
Burn barrel? But why in the ground, I wonder?
To: 2Jedismom
It was up-side down. We couldn't really tell if there was a hole in it already or if the pony stepped on it and it gave way. Too small a hole for Bay to have gotten a foot in that particular hole but it wouldn't have held him.
To: HairOfTheDog
yes I can see that! That is why it is so creepy.
And the fact that I watched a Dateline special last night on a guy that kidnapped teenage girls and kept them for year in his underground "dungeon" doesn't help.
To: HairOfTheDog
I am relieved, actually... when you mentioned a "monstrosity", my imagination ran wild for a minute...
To: RosieCotton
Maybe a burn barrel or maybe to catch rain water???
I am just trying to think up some rational explanation that isn't creepy :-)
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
Yes, that was perhaps too overly dramatic of a description. But it is a puzzler!

Other than for putting a body in, I can't think of one. And it was empty! Well...so far...

Yeah...that's really strange. I think I might have called the Authorities.
I gotta go...Blue and Gold banquet tonight. I'm taking a chocolate cake and some of OT's Hotwings (that'll show the little buggers!) LOL
"Here, try this kid..."
Anyway, Steve is on his way home with the butter needed for the sauce.
See ya later, aligators.

Hopefully it wasn't full of toxic chemicals that have leeched out into the ground leaving the barrel empty...
I guess if the pony sprouts another head, we'll know somethin's wrong...
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
LOL! I was anxiously waiting myself...but I wasn't thinkin' quite as you were
To: 2Jedismom
Yeah...that's really strange. I think I might have called the Authorities. Yeah, but if we didn't call the authorities when we found buried hair and clothing, no point now.... ;~D
To: RosieCotton
LOL! The pony with two heads would be bad. But ecurbh with two heads might be fun!
