This will be the headline the day after the November elections if the Democrat nominee is astute enough to use one single viseral issue to hammer George Bush.
Illegal immigration. If the Democrat opponent promises to make the U.S. borders secure and stop the flow of illegals he will be able to steal all the votes he needs from the Republicans to propel himself into the White House. Bush has struck a nerve with the vast majority of Americans on the issue of illegal immigration and it is ready to explode in his face if his Democrat opponet is smart enough to capitalize on it.
Bush should take a clue on what happened in California on the issue of granting drivers licenses to illegals. The turn around in the California state house on this issue was monumental. California with the majority of Hispanics in the U.S. would not stand for something as simple as granting a drivers license to illegals. What does Bush think will be the reaction of the vast majority of Americans to his far reaching proposal? Clearly he has planted a potential political bomb shell that can be detonated by a Democrat opponet with the guts to use it.
The democrats would not abandon a champion who promises to secure our borders. Republicans and independents will in huge numbers abandon George Bush on this one issue. As a life long Republican I hope the Democrat who runs against Bush is too cowardly and poorly advised to use this wedge issue against my party. But I wouldn't bet on it.

If there are in fact 8-12 million illegals in this country (not all of them from Mexico by the way) how do you one issue people propose to get them out of here? How many police, prosecutors, holding areas, trains, buses, and at what cost would it take to achieve what you want?
I am in agreement with you that something needs to be done but your simplistic rantings and posts without solutions are pointless. It's all been said before.

Have you bothered to read where the Democrats stand on Immigration? You should have before posting this thread.
Cannot figure out why it is posted since there have been many immigration threads and they all say the same crap -- Pres Bush is going to lose his base over this issue -- where are they going?
The Dems want all illegals to become citizens -- what part of that do you not understand? Do you honestly think the base would desert the President over one issue? If you do, you have not been a Republican because we were in the minority for way too long and we remember 9/11 even if the Democrats don't want to go there.
Why don't you check out the facts and see that the vast majority of the President's Base stands with him -- over 90% and quit taking the negative posters on here that wouldn't vote for Bush for any reason -- they use immigration as an excuse to bash the President.

The Democrats support illegal and legal immigration even more than Republicans do. To them, Bush's proposal doesn't go far enough.
If the Democratic nominee advocates ending illegal immigration and sending them back to Mexico or wherever they came from I'll eat my hat.

You have to be kidding right? The democRATS WANT ILLEGALS to continue to come over here. It's how they get more votes by giving away everything from free schooling, free healthcare, free housing, free food, free, etc,etc,etc...

Yes, except that all the Rats believe exactly the same as the GOP in this and don't want to lose the illegal alien vote.

"Bush should take a clue on what happened in California.." He is definitely a couple of clues short.

Any chance your theory had falls on the last condition: The Democrats aren't smart enough. In fact, they all want Amnesties that are worse than the "not an Amnesty" Amnesty that President Bush has proposed. The likely effect of the Bush Amnesty is that it will depress his totals somewhat, though not enough to affect his reelection. The cost to the GOP will be in seats downticket.

Yeah, the Democrats are going to come out against illegal immigration. I think that will happen as soon as they come up with their plan to ban abortions.
