I would say 30-06 but the .308/7.62 has the same ballistic signature. Plus my m-1a1 takes the 7.62.You can pack just a little more powder behind the 30-06 if you are so inclined.
But now that I've said that, when I had my Girand re-barreled, I had it done in .308. Its just more common these days. When I had it re-barreled, you could buy match ammo cheaper in .308 than in .30-06. I haven't priced match ammo lately so I don't know if that still holds true.

Why not? My spouse wants a Glock, and we both have CC permits. Get it for her. It's absolutely one of the most reliable handguns out there.

My
Kahr P9 is small, though not too small (ultra-compact pistols have grips too short for your pinky), thin due to a single stack magazine (double stack magazines give more capacity, but increase the width of the pistol), fires a 9mm round which is sufficient to the task, shoots darn near as accurately as my Walther P99, has a very nice trigger, is light in weight, has a minimum of controls, and has quite acceptable recoil.
A Sig P239 also wouldn't be a bad choice.

So much depends on your temperment and mental capabilities. Any pistol .38 or better can be extremely effective for personal self defense against someone who doesn't know you have it until you pull it out and shoot. Even if it's some jihadist with a shotgun or rifle that's not pointed at you at that moment.
But if you're considering becoming an unofficial "first responder" to an incident, that opens up a whole case of worm cans. Then you should consider a 12 guage if that suits you, or a Sport Utility Rifle in .556mm, 7.62 Russian, or 7.62 Nato.
Just remember that as you go dashing in to engage the jihadis before they can kill more innocents, the first arriving police are likely to shoot you if they see you holding a weapon, before they sort out who's who.

Why not just use hollow points?I believe that there are barriers that will frag a hollowpoint before they reach their target. Sometimes, people wear things that hollowpoints don't work well with. Like a heavy wool coat over a cotton Chamois shirt and a thermal undershirt. I can't say that the combination will stop a bullet, but premature expansion through thick clothing is likely with some expanding ammo. It doesn't hurt to have something that doesn't expand interspaced with the expanding stuff. IMHO, of course...

Do not buy Glock for concealed carry.Sheesh. Do not OVERLOOK Glock for concealed carry. I like the 36 myself. Glock is THE gun for both the local Sheriff department and police.

Hmmm...I hadn't thought about it, but maybe it's time to put the revolver back in the glove compartment.

Make sure you keep that Glock in a holster, and DON'T "Mexican carry" it in your pants.
And be REAL careful holstering it...

My father has a garand that he 'found' at the end of the war and it is, of course, chambered for the 06. It can still put rounds in the black at 500 yards!

Time to clean and lube the collection once more. Here's the drill:
Carry weapon: Glock 30 loaded with Federal 230 gr. Hydrashoks. And it goes everywhere I go.
Assorted other autos include Wilson Combat CQB, Para-Ord P14 Ltd., Sig P245 and lots more Glocks (I forget how many). All loaded the same.
My Glock 19 and Springfield XD9 are loaded up with Cor-Bon 9mm 124 +Ps (for the little woman -- and she knows how to put 'em where they belong).
Remington 870 is loaded with Federal 00 buckshot with slugs on the side saddle. Mossberg 500 loaded the same.
I've got SS-109s loaded in the AR and if I really need to reach out and touch someone, there's my M1A packing Federal 150 gr. .308 ammo.
A good idea is to have different weapons in different locations in case you have to bug out in a hurry. So, I'm set up in Nevada and Arizona in case Kali gets untenable. That is, more untenable than it already is.

As a Glock-head, i can agree with the first half. As a gun owner, I can agree with the second half. I would never "Mexican" carry my glock unless the tube was empty. I have back-pocket carried with an empty barrel before, but that's not my normal mode of operation.

OTOH, I think Eaker is brilliant to have the same Glock .40s stashed all over, with all family members equally trained up on them, and mags and ammo interchangeable like crazy if TSHTF.
That's smart.

It can still put rounds in the black at 500 yards!I got my Girand pretty Cheap in the early '80's, but the barrel was shot smooth and it was pitted. I had not choice but to re-barrel. At the time, my friend was shooting match with his M-14 (a great gun) and had a good line on .308 so I followed suit and rebarreled in the same caliber. It works fine in that mode, though I had one errant clip that wouldn't handle the slightly shorter cartridge.
