I am extremely upset. It just keeps restarting automatically...counts down 30 seconds on the black screen then attempts then fails then counts down again...

Sorry doll! Just catching up.
This problem is way over my head - ecurbh's not sure either. I would stop doing anything till you have qualified help.
Counting down and then shutting down sounds more virus-ey to me than mere software or hardware malfunction. If it is virus-caused, you may do more damage the more you allow it to run.
Aren't you using Windows XP? It has a 'system restore' function that might work here. It will take you back to some saved 'point in time' in the past, whenever it last did a save, daily or weekly or whatever... but I have never done it.
Tech support through the manufacturer? - Is it a major brand like Dell or Compac?
