The Hobbit Hole V - Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...
ecurbh

Posted on 12/11/2003 2:07:57 PM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Never made it to the Boundary Waters myself, although my roommate and I had talked of it. Spent a couple weekends near Grand Marais, though, where I took some of the best pictures of my life.

You don't need a big house to invite people hiking... just a big outside!

And you don't need a big house to invite people over, just a big couch.

ecurbh and I want to buy a couch like the one at Entmoot. Or at least just sections like the end piece! It's available..... think I am gonna grab it!

We don't have to go there... during winter. Wanna show you the north shore of Lake Superior sometime, though. Preferably in the Fall. ~sigh~

Are you sure fall is a good idea?

Good morning...

I got intrigued and did a Google search... the poem is taken from The Tempest, Act III, Scene 1; it's spoken by Ferdinand to Miranda. Incidentally, a couple of definitions for the name "Miranda" claim that Shakespeare invented the name for this play; it's taken from the Latin word "miror" meaning, "to admire"; "Miranda" then meaning "something admirable" or "worthy of admiration". The phrase "Admirable Miranda" then becomes a play on words!

For a LOTR reference, check out this site.

Yes it was! The Saturday before my birthday was the best!
I got up and took a long hot bubble bath. Then went to pick up my Mom and we went to the Spa at Canyon Oaks and I received a pedicure. Then she and I had a fantastic salad, lunch & dessert by the window facing the pool and the water fountain in their beautiful dinning room. After that, we went to my husbands massage clinc and mom got a 1 hour massage (I went shopping) then I got a one hour massage. It was heavenly.

That evening Jason took me to eat at El Chico and from there he and I went to Applebee’s and had a Baileys Irish Cream Frozen Cappuccino. Awesome! Then we went to rent 2 movies and pick up some drinks from HEB. However, that was all a front.

Come to find out he had thrown me a Surprise birthday party. I had a house full of friends and a few family members when we got home. He had three friends of mine there, that I hadn't seen in 5 years.

He did great!

Yep, that's Steve's old stompin' grounds.

We hiked way up the Baptism and went to a place called "High Falls". Them was some high falls, I tell ya.

Didn't stop me. I leaped right off the top of them into the water! Brrr!

If you're really adventurous, you could canoe into the Boundary Waters...very primitive camping.

Just mind you are alert and don't hit one of them dotted lines on the boundary area at speed, even in a canoe.

Here's a south shore pic for you... The Grand Sable Banks.

If I ever have the time and money, I would like to take a road trip all the way around Superior. Lots of gorgeous country!

Here it is! I jumped right off the top of these falls!

I think it's state property now...used to be private and we asked permission to hike up there. I bet you anything they don't allow you to leap off the top any more.

LOL :-)

The legend lives on from the chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called ’gitche gumee’
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of november turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the edmund fitzgerald weighed empty.
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of november came early.

The ship was the pride of the american side
Coming back from some mill in wisconsin
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
With a crew and good captain well seasoned
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for cleveland
And later that night when the ship’s bell rang
Could it be the north wind they’d been feelin’?
The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the captain did too,
T’was the witch of november come stealin’.
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the gales of november came slashin’.
When afternoon came it was freezin’ rain
In the face of a hurricane west wind.

When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin’.
Fellas, it’s too rough to feed ya.
At seven p.m. a main hatchway caved in, he said
Fellas, it’s been good t’know ya
The captain wired in he had water comin’ in
And the good ship and crew was in peril.
And later that night when his lights went outta sight
Came the wreck of the edmund fitzgerald.

Does any one know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searches all say they’d have made whitefish bay
If they’d put fifteen more miles behind her.
They might have split up or they might have capsized;
May have broke deep and took water.
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

Lake huron rolls, superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion.
Old michigan steams like a young man’s dreams;
The islands and bays are for sportsmen.
And farther below lake ontario
Takes in what lake erie can send her,
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of november remembered.

In a musty old hall in detroit they prayed,
In the maritime sailors’ cathedral.
The church bell chimed till it rang twenty-nine times
For each man on the edmund fitzgerald.
The legend lives on from the chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call ’gitche gumee’.
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of november come early!

Don't have the big outside or room for a big couch! Though they do have the big outside part at the house - Dad's, I mean. All wooded, though.

Maybe someday...
