The Hobbit Hole V - Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...
ecurbh

Posted on 12/11/2003 2:07:57 PM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Hm...some of those look familiar. In the Caves of Ice, for example.

But there's another series too, that I was thinking of. They were meshed in my brain somehow. Involved a lot of traipsing around South America and messing with radio equipment and boats, and dealing with poisonous insects and pirhanas. Sound at all familiar?

Darn...it's on the tip of my tongue! Another Tom, I think.

Steve just emailed me...wanted to know where his wallet was. Here is my reply...

Last time I saw it was yesterday...

I was wandering down the road when what did I see? Something shining and bright on the grass beside the curb. I bent down to see what it was, but when I did, I managed to step on a rather flattened squirrel. Seeing that the bright shiney object was nothing more than a beer can tab, I returned home in dismay, to wash my shoes and fetch another pair of shoes from the closet. As I entered the house, I gingerly removed my contaminated shoe and tossed it in the washer, added what I deemed to be an appropriate amount of soap. Then, navigating my way carefully through the house, I managed to make it to the bedroom without falling down (a major accomplishment, if you know me). I rummaged through the closet until I found a suitable pair of shoes. I finally found the sought-after shoes, on the floor of the closet, right beside your wallet.

K

(PS...all parts of this story, except the part about where your wallet is, is fiction.)

LOL It's all bunk. I would never go out on a walk without the jedis, and there is not even a mention of them! LOL

I noticed his wallet on the floor of the closet yesterday...when I went to get my shoes...that's the only part that's real.

Well, I don't know. Tom Swift had some adventures in South America, but I haven't read them all so I don't know which ones. (Incidentally, that site I linked to actually has the text of some of the books which are in the public domain.)

There were lots of children's series books published from the teens to the 70s... the Nancy Drew series and the Hardy Boys series are two well-known examples. It's possible there was another series featuring a Tom who had adventures in South America!

Weren't the Hardy Boy's series of the 50s and 60s just rewritten and simplified versions of the 20s and 30s books? My understanding is that the ones that were done later were "dumbed down" versions.

The ones that I read to Matthew and Joshua are "photocopied" versions of the ones written in the 20s and early 30s. They even almost apologize that they are not really politically correct. But they are stunning in their use of the English language and I want my jedis to hear it!

They are put out by Applewood Press...I highly recommend them. They even have where you can send in a nickel and buy the "next in the series"...but of course, it's just a photocopy of the orderform in the old book.

The old Hardy Boy books were sooooo much better than the ones in the 70s. They re-wrote them, and the new ones have many of the same titles, but totally different stories. It's bizarre!

Beside the point, I know.

I'm gonna see if I can find those other books one of these days, though.

They weren't even the same books! Seriously! Just for kicks sometime, see if you can get a copy of the SAME TITLE published later, and compare the two. They aren't the same at all!

I hadn't realized they'd republished the old ones. That's good to know! Now if only I had a couple of kids to read 'em to...

For the most part, yes. They removed the un-PC stuff and simplified the language; but they also published new books, until 1979. The reprinted books were the first 38 books of the series; books 39 to 59 were "new" editions, put out at the rate of 1 per year from 1959 to 1979.

My mom ordered three more for the jedis for Christmas. They are truly beautiful books all around. Hardback, with dustcovers that are photocopies of the originals. Some guy had a mint collection of the books and they were able to photocopy and re-print them. It's funny to see even the order-blanks at the end of the books...even the wording for the order-blank is cool!

The jedis are good...Josh is in his preschool, Matthew is doing his math. Multiplication and division.

I'm enjoying a cup of coffee.

Here is the the Publisher's Note, on the inside of the book I have here...The Mark on the Door

Much has changed in America since the Hardy Boys series first began in 1927. The modern reader may be delighted with the warmth and exactness of the language, the wholesome innocence of the characters, their engagement with the natural world or the nonstop action without the use of violence; but just as well, the modern reader may be extremely uncomfortable with the racial and social stereotyping, the roles women play in these books or the use of phrases or situations which may conjure up some repsonse in the modern reader that was not felt by the reader of the times.

For good or bad, we Americans have changed quite a bit since these books were first issued. Many readers will remember these editions with great affection and will be delighted with their return; others will wonder why we just don't let them disappear. These books are part of our heritage. They are windows on our real past. For that reason, except for the addition of this note, we are prsenting The Mark on the Door unedited and unchanged from its first addition.

Here is the letter...I haven't sent it yet, so if it is in error, please let me know!

Dear Maj. ****,

Hello!

My name is *****. My husband and I are friends of Andrew and Celeste. She gave me your address.

I wanted to write and thank you for your service. There are so many people across the country who are so grateful to you and all the other soldiers that are deployed and helping to protect our freedom here at home.

I have been involved with a group of politically conservative people who came together to discuss, of all things, the Lord of the Rings movies and books! It has gradually turned into a group of people that not only enjoy the books and movies, but also support and pray for each other and are very active in supporting the troops. We call ourselves The Free Republic Hobbit Hole and we’ve gradually gotten together and several of us have actually met and some have taken vacations together!

Whenever any of us has a friend or acquaintance that is deployed, they like to send that person a gift of appreciation.

So, you are now the recipient of a Free Republic Hobbit Hole knife...a combined effort on the part of many people! These knives have been sent all over the place! We have heard reports of a soldier in Iraq that the knife he carried concerned an Iraqi bad guy enough that he left him alone and another soldier was involved in an accident where he was able to cut his way out of his vehicle using his Hobbit Hole knife!

I hope this knife will be a blessing to you and that you will find it useful. You will note on the knife there is a web page address. You can go to that web page and find out what the Hobbit Hole has been up to and what it’s doing to support the troops at the current time.

Again, on behalf of my family and those members of the Free Republic Hobbit Hole, thank you so much for your service.

Sincerely,

Rosie, any chance the series you're thinking of is the "Danny Dunn" stories? It wasn't an uncle he had, it was some goofball professor type, but the adventures sound similar.

Okay, so in addition to my (somewhat) feigned indignation about the Shoes of Power, and the fact that I got into a skirmish over in Mordor, I didn't wanna come back and whine about Nana. But it's worse than ever.

Since the scheduling of the hip replacement (Feb. 3) she has now injured her shoulder and her knee. She is totally and completely unable to get up from a sitting position...that includes sitting anywhere if you get my drift. Wife has been dealing with all of that. And her older sister is coming (prolly already here) to help until the surgery...if we can make it that long.

Last night around midnight Nana had to go. So when she was ready she yelled for the Mrs. Mrs. was downstairs grading papers. I was online. Boys were asleep. Mrs. got up and said "okay I'm coming."

Nana didn't hear and yelled again. Wife said "I'll be right there."

Nana didn't hear and starts banging her cane on the floor! Wife yells up "I'm coming!"

Nana didn't hear and starts banging the cane again. So I went to the stairs and yelled up "Mom she heard you the first time, she'll be right there."

I swear I don't know what I would have said or done if she had woken up Luke. He's not been sleeping well anyway.

Then today wife gets info back on pre-surgery blood work. All of her levels are "abnormal" whatever that means. This is after wife pulled strings to get her in to see a friend of ours who is a pulmonary specialist. She had to see him so that he could take her off of coumadin (the blood thinner). Conveniently coumadin was NOT on her list of medications that we knew she was taking. Had they not found it she could easily have bled to death.

Also found out she's taking Zoloft, but "I don't know why."

Sigh...wife is all stressed out and will prolly come home with some antidepressants of her own when she sees her doctor tomorrow. I know I whined a lot during the production about having to take all the burden. But I had it easy.

We are investigating the option of short term care before the surgery. Especially if these abnormal blood levels delay the surgery.

Sorry for the rant. Ranted to my b-i-l yesterday, but he gave me a buttload of psychobabble about how "we need to have the conversation about how her needs and your needs aren't being met..."

But the fact is, no one is currently in an emotional state to have a rational discussion. Once we figure out this course of action though, we'll be seriesly having the discussion regarding long term care.
