Want input on firing phone monopoly

I want to get rid of BellSouth and hook up my wife's laptop with my high speed cable modem account. Need advice on firing the phone company and building possibly a wireless home network with cable modem.

You'll want to use a router, not a switch ... wirelesss router if it seems feasible. As many connection points to your router as you have computers in the house.

And don't forget that some cellphone systems are on a pay as you go plan.
