Barbara Bush disses Texas A&M on Sean Hannity today.

I'm think I'm pretty hacked at Barbara Bush today. She was talking about her daughters today on Hannity and Sean wanted to know where they are graduating from this year.
Mrs. Bush then said that one of them is graduating from the University of Texas, "You know, Sean", she said, "THE University of Texas, that's how we say it here in Texas - THE University of Texas."
She repeatedly put the stress on "THE". I hate to seem petty, but that really chaps me the wrong way. The "THE" deal is something that the teasips in Austin have used to dig at Texas A&M for decades.
This is what irritates me: the George H.W. Bush (#41) Library is in College Station, TX, at Texas A&M University, a school of over 40,000 students.
Do you know why it's in College Station and not in Austin?
BECAUSE t.u. IS FULL OF LIBERALS AND THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A MARIJUANA FUELED RIOT IN AUSTIN IF THE LIBRARY HAD BEEN PLACED IN AUSTIN.
President Bush wisely placed his library in a friendly location, where true Texas hospitality was displayed to him and also several times to Vice President Quayle. Neither of them would have gotten the time of day in Austin in those years, and they know it.
I for one am sick of the condescending teasip attitudes towards Texas A&M, and I am very sad that Barbara Bush was repeating the snide little remarks that one expects from a teasip.
I certainly would not have expected that remark from a former First Lady against Texas A&M, which provided a location for a very fine library, complete with luxury apartment for Mr. and Mrs. Bush.
Shame on you, Mrs. Bush, for insulting Texas A&M by calling that little liberal arts school in Austin as THE University.
There are many fine universities in Texas, Mrs. Bush, and the one most friendly to your husband's administration was the one that gave his library it's permanent home.

GW is the president, but his family is a bit too elitist for me.

If Aggies are reading this thread we may want to adopt a larger font. And use smaller words.

A&M's biggest rival is UT, but UT has always considered OU and other national teams to be their true rivals. A&M just can't stand that.LOL. The year we won 63-14, Mack stated that they were overlooking OU. I read many times over on UT message boards that they overlooked us cause we werent even their rival. Their 'true' rivals were A&M and Arkansas. Not laughing at you, just remembering how those people were scrambling for excuses after that game.
I personally like all the Texas schools. I would be proud for my daughter to attend any of them. I think she would find way fewer liberals at A&M though.

Musta been a long time ago. The rivalry with Arkansas has been out of the picture for years. 2003 was the first time in what? 12 years since the two teams have played a regular season game?

Most Aggie's I know of which my Brother in law is one, Also refer to their school as
The University too!
Any way she is probably referring to how her grand daughter says it. And In no way meant any disrespect to A&M

keep in mind, I said they were scrambling for excuses. Anything but admit they lost big to their huge rival. Losing to us like that left them in shock, kinda like when we lost to the Aggie lites (OSU) two years in a row.

Musta been, LOL, claiming that a team that they hadn't played a reg season game with in ..... 9 years at that point... was their 'real' rival.

"
The reason it is called "The University of Texas" instead of "the University of Texas" is that the Texas Legislature made a grammatical error by capitalizing the article "the" in the law establishing the university."
Is that something they teach 'em at Fish Camp?

Is that something they teach 'em at Fish Camp? I was told that by the professor who taught my Enlish 103 class. She had a bachelors degree from t.u. and a Phd from Columbia.

Walk around the A&M campus, and everywhere you look, you will see a tribute to the fine soldiers who gave their lives for this country. I seem to remember A&M banning students from flying American flags out of their dorm rooms after 9/11.

I seem to remember A&M banning students from flying American flags out of their dorm rooms after 9/11. That ban was quickly squashed when former students got wind of it.

I always thought the "THE" business was to distinguish it from UTSA, UTEP, UTA, UTD, etc, etc, more so than A&M. 'course A&M now has bunches of "at"s as well. Kingsville, Commerce, Galveston, West Texas, Texarkana, etc.

Actually the ban never took place as the policy was reversed before any flags were taken down. By the way, the flags were huge. They were hung from the roof of 4-story dormitories and reached down to the ceiling of the first story.
