Preparing for jihad?

Does one grow a thick beard or shave their beard in preperation for Jihad?

Back in the 1980's when I was in Egypt a long beard was the mark of an Islamic fundamentalist. Many middle of the road Egyptian men wouldn't wear a beard because they didn't want that connotation - it would guarantee a traffic stop!

I have read that when preparing for martyrdom a "shaheed" (their word - mine would be to homicidal idiot) is supposed to shave himself all over.

So in other word... both...

I don't know - I was just kidding. I thought I read somewhere that they actually shave before their visit to allah.
