Back in the 1980's when I was in Egypt a long beard was the mark of an Islamic fundamentalist. Many middle of the road Egyptian men wouldn't wear a beard because they didn't want that connotation - it would guarantee a traffic stop!
I have read that when preparing for martyrdom a "shaheed" (their word - mine would be to homicidal idiot) is supposed to shave himself all over.

Then I would say that the two guys I see at the gym are fundementalists because they have grown thick and fairly long beards in the two months since I saw them last, but on the other hand, they are not so fundemental so as to avoid hanging out at the gym with hardbodied female infidels dressed in skin tight, low cut workout garb.
