Press Trust of India

New Delhi, January 23: Amid high alert in Delhi ahead of the Republic Day, police on Friday claimed to have foiled a major terrorist strike in the national Capital by arresting a Hizb-e-Islami militant and recovering 3.5 kilogram of high explosives from him.

Ayaz Mohammad Shah, who had allegedly planned to strike in the Capital to disturb the Republic Day celebrations, was nabbed near Welcome Metro Railway Station in north-east Delhi on Thursday, Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh said.

Five million on US list of terrorists

By Our Correspondent

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 22: Security agents in the United States have a master list of five million people worldwide thought to be potential terrorists or criminals, media reports here said.

"The US lookout index contains some five million names of known terrorists and other persons representing a potential problem," Brian Davis, a senior Canadian immigration official, was quoted as saying.

Names on the list are compared against those applying for visas or on flights travelling to the US. Anyone whose name is on the list is questioned or banned from entering the US - as passengers were on two British Airways flights to Los Angeles two weeks ago.

Mr Davis said Canadian visa officials abroad do not keep an extensive list like the US because terrorists can use bogus documents and change their identities.

Fake fog could defend nuclear plants

18:18 12 January 04

NewScientist.com news service

Clouds of artificial fog could be used to defend nuclear power stations against airborne terrorist attacks under proposals currently being considered in Germany.

A spokeswoman at Germany's Federal Environment Ministry confirmed that the companies that operate the country's 18 nuclear power stations are assessing the installation of artificial fog machines as a defence against suicide attacks from the air, alongside other possibilities.

Under the proposal, "a nuclear power plant under attack is surrounded within seconds by an artificial, dense wall of fog", reads a statement from the ministry.

Fog or smoke would disguise a power station's location from the air. Although radar can penetrate fog, commercial aircraft are not fitted with radar systems capable of identifying structures on the ground.
