Yes, Al-Qaida did give veiled warnings. Very veiled.
I still dont agree with taking every threat as a deadly serious warning. It gives free publicity to the terrorists and helps their cause by spreading fear their proven goal in life.

Disagree. Spreading fear is the goal of Stephen King. Destroying Western civilization is the goal of Al Qaeda. Fear is the smallest weapon in al Qaeda's arsenal of terror.
People aren't exactly abandoning New York City because of an Internet post.
They can accomplish a lot more toward their goal by actually carrying out one of their threats, and that can be prevented by vigiliance, even with the B.S.
