It is pretty important. If it isnt calibrated, you can get false readings.
with a high range instrument, that can mean it shows less or more than what you are being exposed to.
CDV-717's are ion chambers. They have a particular problem with the 25' cable that connects the ion chamber assembly to the body for remote surveys. That area often has trouble in calibration due to loose fitting and bad connections.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Jerusalem (CNSNews.com) - Four Israelis were killed and seven others wounded by a female suicide bomber who blew herself up at the main crossing point between Israel and the Gaza Strip on Wednesday morning.
The Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades - part of Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction - and Hamas claimed joint responsibility for the terrorist attack.
Brigadier General Gadi Shamni said the woman had arrived at the Erez crossing along with a group of people seeking permission to work in Israel. Thousands of Palestinians undergo security checks at the Erez crossing before crossing into Israel or the adjoining industrial zone for work.
According to Shamni, the woman told the soldiers at the security check that she had a metal plate in her leg and would make the security alarm ring. As she stepped aside to wait for the female soldiers to check her she blew herself up.
David Baker, an official in Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's office, said the attack proved that the terrorists are so intent on killing Israelis they don't even care if they hurt their own people."
