Al Qaeda again threatens New York, Washington and Los Angeles - Daily Terror Threat

A new message was posted in the last few hours by the Jeddah-based al-Qaeda-linked Al-Islah (Reform) society calling on Muslims to flee New York, Washington and Los Angeles in advance of major al Qaeda attacks in those cities. This is revealed by DEBKAfile.

The message accuses the United States of predetermining its end (doom) by its policies. ?The Jews rule the Pentagon by remote control and (are the cause) of Muslims being killed in every corner of the world. The United States should therefore expect more blows.?

The message is signed on behalf of the al Bayan (The Threat) movement by ?your warrior brother, Abul Hassan al Khadrami?.

Our Muslim expert identifies the name of the signatory as belonging to a Yemeni from Hadhrameuth, the Bin Ladens? place of origin where Osama enjoys substantial tribal support.

DEBKAfile?s counter-terror sources stress that warnings appearing on these forums are taken both very seriously and with caution by the intelligence services keeping track of the terrorist network?s electronic traffic.

Last November, Jeddah-based fundamentalist forums addressed a message to an Al Qaeda member, saying whoever understands ? understands; whoever knows, knows, but we are marching towards an operation that will take us to Paradise. Three days later, the Mombasa Paradise hotel was blown up killing 12 Kenyans and 3 Israelis and a failed shoulder-launched Strela anti-air missile missed an Israeli airliner at Mombasa airport.

NY Gold Hits 15-Year High in First '04 Session

January 5, 2004
By Alden Bentley

NEW YORK, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Gold futures traded above $425 an ounce for the first time in more than 15 years in New York Monday, extending its watershed rally on the first trading day of 2004 as investors continued to diversify out of the beleagured dollar.

Other precious metals surged as well, but gold is considered a form of currency and is seen as a hard alternative to the greenback. It built on last year's 20 percent gain as the dollar hit a new low against the soaring euro and fell to its cheapest level against the yen in three years.

At the COMEX division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, February gold rose to $425.50 an ounce, its highest since the summer of 1988, as London traders wrapped up for the day.

"look, I'm not trying to poo-poo this stuff or you personally."

Understood, and no problem.

As for moving a family out what kind of a message does that send? Where is "safe"? I'm in the same boat, all of us are in the same boat as American's..we have a job to do and day-to-day existence to muddle through as best we can. Deal with the problem by attacking it head-on and kick-ass as necessary along the way and hopefully make a better future for your kids and loved ones. Nobody leads or demonstrates Leadership (Capital "L") from the rear or by sending their families to who-knows-where. I am here to expedite as much as possible the Jihadist's desire to meet with Allah face-to-face. Period.

Arrests and trials of terrorists have been ongoing and are being conducted very quietly, and I mean 3dB below the noise.

FBI checking white powder found in car

Jan 7, 2004

FBI agents are analyzing some white powder found in a vehicle on Interstate 8 near Felicity, Calif., that is suspected to be an ingredient for a toxic substance, California Highway Patrol officers said.

The driver and passenger of the vehicle, Ebony Woods and Astrid Tepatti, both 21 and of California, were arrested by the California Highway Patrol and booked into Imperial County jail for alleged possession of a concealed weapon and stolen property, officers said.

The white powder, which the CHP believes is an ingredient for ricin, was found in the late-model Hyundai after officers gained probable cause to inspect the car early Monday morning, said CHP officer Joseph Miller.

Officers also found other chemical ingredients for ricin — which is a lethal, natural poison that comes from castor beans — in the vehicle and a recipe for how to make the poison.

Miller said CHP is suspicious that Woods and Tepatti may have had motive to use the materials as a lethal weapon.

The investigation of the chemicals and white powder was handed over to the FBI, Miller said.

Meanwhile, CHP officers arrested the two females after they noticed the Hyundai pulled over on the side of the westbound lanes of I-8 near Felicity, Calif., and stopped to check it out early Monday morning, Miller said.

Officers found evidence of recent damage to the vehicle and became suspicious when Woods and Tepatti told different stories of what happened to the vehicle, Miller said.

The officers inspected the car and found a concealed handgun and stolen clothing, Miller said.

CHP later found out Woods and Tepatti were involved in a recent collision near Calexico.

The CHP originally contacted the city of Yuma Fire Department Hazardous Materials Crew to determine if the white powder was ricin. The results were negative. Yuma Fire Department was called because it had the closest Haz Mat team to the scene of the incident.

CHP then handed over the powder and other chemicals to the FBI, which has taken over the investigation.

Ricin is a naturally toxic compound that is highly poisonous; less than a pinpoint can kill a human if it is ingested, injected or inhaled. It has no known cure.

Ricin potentially can be used as an agent of biological warfare and as a weapon of mass destruction.

Probably just Meth users. Ricin is often used in the production process.

Gold prices set to cross Rs 8,000 mark

KARACHI: Local gold prices, hit another life high for the second time in as many months, here Tuesday rising to Rs 7,946 per 10 grams in the country after prices in the international market touched at $427 per ounce.

“There are expectations that gold prices will rise to cross Rs 8,000 mark due to uncertainty in the Middle East,” said Haji Farooq, a gold importer. Another reason behind the recent surge is declining value of the greenback against the euro, he added.

“Investors have been placing their funds in gold instead of currency and capital markets,” said Mr Farooq.

Traders said the Middle East situation usually sets the trend of investment in the international gold market, and added that currently investors are switching over to gold in preference over the capital market due to uncertainty in the Middle East.

Local gold prices rose 6.85 percent, from Rs 7,436 per 10 grams on December 1 to Rs 7,946 on January 4. Prices have increased by Rs 201 per 10 grams in the first week of January.

Salafi Group for Call and Combat

Random thought...

I wonder if "Call 19" from the recent Bin Laden photo/collage has any association to this "Call and Combat" group.

Business
Gold prices at record high of Rs 6,400
Mumbai, Jan. 6. (PTI): Gold prices zoomed up further to close at a historic high of Rs 6,400 per ten gram, while silver skyrocketed up by Rs 275 per kilo to end at yet another all-time high of Rs 9,880 per kilo on the bullion market today.

Attributing the steep rise in gold prices to firm global advices, dealers said in London, gold was fixed in the morning at $428 per ounce while in Asia, it had touched $425 per ounce, a level not seen since December 1988.

In Hong Kong, the yellow metal closed sharply firm at $424.20-424.70 per ounce as against the previous close of $417.20-417.70 per ounce.

In the local market, pure gold (99.9 purity) resumed firm at Rs 6,340 and continued to rise smartly on heavy stockists' demand, before closing at a new record level of Rs 6,400, showing a huge rally of Rs 130 over the previous close of Rs 6,270.

The same trend was seen in standard gold (99.5 purity) as well when the metal resumed firm at Rs 6,300 and shot up in line with pure gold and closed at an all-time high of Rs 6,360, showing a similar gain over yesterday's close of Rs 6,230.

Ready silver (.999 fineness) commenced strong at Rs 9,790 and shot up further on increased industrial and stockists' buying and closed at Rs 9,880, revealing a whopping Rs 275 rally over the last close of Rs 9,605.

I don't beleive that is correct. I've read that many manufacturers of meth may use ricin as a "booby trap" incase of being caught though. Also much of the same lab equipment is used in the production of ricin as is used in the manufacturing of meth.

I can still feel the fear, a child that would not be allowed home and a navy husband on a ship some where.

granny, you've really got me thinking about things on a practical level. My brother works at least an hour from his home, my s-i-l doesn't drive and they have two small children in school and one baby at home. My parents are nearby but they don't even have tonight's dinner in mind, much less 3 days worth of food. Mr. hummingbird is about an hour away and his grandfather is at least an hour away from him on the other side of town. I think alot of my personal anxiety is in not being prepared and knowing that my family (in three separate locations in the city) is also not prepared. Seeing this one line from your post is making me get off my butt TODAY! How do I motivate my family when they think I'm a 'conspiracy nut' just for being on FR?!

Gold Reaches 15-Year High in London as Dollar Drops Versus Euro
Jan. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Gold rose to its highest price in more than 15 years in London, after the dollar fell to a record against the euro for a second day and as the threat of terrorism made the metal more attractive as a haven.

Gold for immediate delivery was trading up $3.80, or 0.9 percent at $428.20 an ounce in London as of 9:55 a.m., the highest since Dec. 5, 1988. The euro was up 0.4 percent at $1.2724, after climbing as high as $1.2733, bolstering the appeal of bullion in Europe.

Prices of gold jumped more than 19 percent last year, partly because of a 19 percent slide in the dollar against the euro. Some investors buy gold as a hedge against a falling dollar. Also, gold is priced in dollars, so it becomes cheaper for holders of other currencies when the U.S. currency weakens.

``Gold has continued its incredibly strong end to the year, driven by the strength of the euro and weakness of the U.S. dollar,'' Kamal Naqvi, an analyst at Barclays Capital in London, said in an e-mailed report.

Fears of a terrorist attack are also boosting gold prices, analysts said. The U.S. raised its national terrorism alert level to ``orange'' for high risk on Dec. 21, the second-highest level on a five-color scale. Yesterday, the nation also began fingerprinting and photographing visitors who require visas for entry.

British Airways Plc, Europe's largest airline, delayed a flight from London to Washington yesterday at the request of U.S. intelligence officials. It held back the same flight on Saturday and Sunday. Air France SA and Aerovias de Mexico SA planes to the U.S. were also grounded over the Christmas and New Year period.

Gold often rises in times of turmoil, when it's seen as a safe investment. Prices jumped 5.4 percent on Sept. 11, 2001, the day of the terrorist attacks in New York and near Washington, D.C.

On Sunday, the Arab television network al-Jazeera broadcast a tape said to be from Osama bin Laden, the fugitive terrorist leader of al-Qaeda, the group responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks. The voice referred to the capture last month of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, suggesting the recording was made recently.

The dollar's drop against the euro came after Atlanta Federal Reserve President Jack Guynn suggested yesterday the Fed won't raise interest rates, currently at a four-decade low, anytime soon because of signs inflation will remain tame.

Continually low interest rates may further weaken the dollar. They make it harder for the U.S. to attract investment from overseas to finance a record budget deficit and its third- largest current account shortfall. They also make gold more attractive as an alternative investment. The Fed's 1 percent target rate is half that of the European Central Bank.

Among other precious metals for immediate delivery in London, silver advanced 4 centS, or 0.6 percent, to $6.25 an ounce and platinum gained $5.50, or 0.7 percent, to $846. Palladium slipped $1.50, or 0.7 percent, to $201.

US, Europeans search for possible al-Qaeda bomber: official

excerpt:

Concerns about the man, who was travelling with a French passport, was one of the factors contributing to security jitters about transatlantic flights, ABC News quoted unnamed officials as saying.

A source in Paris close to the affair said the suspect was an Afghan national whose name -- Abdoulaye -- bore a phonetic resemblance to that of a man captured by US forces in Afghanistan but who managed to escape.

The US authorities noted the resemblance and informed their French counterparts.

The man's birthday and birthplace were not known, the source said.

French officials fear the suspect may have a small bomb whose components might get past airport security, the network said.

The man had a ticket for Air France's Flight 68 from Paris to Los Angeles on December 24 but the flight was cancelled and the passenger never showed up at the airport, it said.
