The Democratic Party has high expectations as it heads into these pivotal US midterm elections.
A historically unpopular Republican president, an American public unhappy with the rising costs of food and bills, and months of favourable polls point to a good night for them on Tuesday.
Democratic candidates lead in well over the 218 seats needed to flip control of the lower chamber of Congress, the House of Representatives, the polls suggest. And they are tied or narrowly ahead in the key Senate races.
A recent New York Times poll had the Senate race in South Carolina, a state Donald Trump won by 18 percentage points in 2024, as a tie. Recent CNN surveys put the Democrats ahead in Texas, Kansas and Maine.
But are the polls accurate?
Recent US political history is littered with examples where public opinion polls, even ones just days before an election, were off the mark. Trump outperformed predictions on his way to White House victories in 2016 and 2024. His narrow defeat in 2020 came after most surveys indicated a more comfortable win for Democrat Joe Biden.
Earlier this year, polls suggested Democrat Abdul El-Sayed was poised for a double-digit win in Michigan's Democratic Senate primary. Instead it was 1%. In Wisconsin's Democratic primary for governor, the candidate that had a polling lead that approached 20 points lost by a fraction of a percent.

There are, of course, a wide variety of outcomes possible on Tuesday.
But whatever happens, the media will declare it a stunning Democrat victory.
When the pollsters fake a poll, why in the world would they make it accurate?
Expect the worst and hope for the best. That’s what I say.
“A historically unpopular Republican president”
What have the job approval numbers of the rat party looked like thew past four years???
I believe the only thing lower is the -wait for it now- media...
If the republicans defy history and keep both the house and senate Trump can stir the pot even more by saying we stole it-fair and square. Then I’d encourage them to do what they do best and that is to riot. The atty. general can then tell our nations cops: ‘no more Mr. Nice Guy’.
I’d be awesome!
A clickbait site four days ago said the summary of Nate Silver and other pollsters is Dems to pick up 24 more House seats and 6 more Senate seats.
Can you imagine the catastrophe if those phony and incompetent pollster places were accurate?
I’d rather not.
Haley Stevens was in polls set to lose by 20 to 24 points to El-Sayed but actually lost by under 1%.
As Bob Ueker said as the baseball announcer in Major League:
“Just a little outside.”
Young demon photo....
She later became a Goldwater Girl.
Then after leading Trump by 18-20 points in swing states she won a huge mandate in the run for President.
Oh, wait, I think he won those swing states and the White House. I get confused.
It was probably true a month ago. But I think that the Democrats may have peaked too soon.
So we'll keep the Senate and they'll win the House but it will be a narrow majority.
I got polled last week and I pretended to be a Democrat.
Just kidding.
Heck if you were to believe the NY Slimes the commies are going to win EVERYTHING plus the kitchen sink..so Im supposed to believe that America wants to be communist..is that what people want..that America wants open borders, that America wants Dems to control everything for the next 50 yrs, if that is what they want who am I to stop them..because it makes no sense to me..if Republicans actually showed up to vote we would win especially in red states but they are going to stay home for what, payback for the war in Iran and just allow the Communist party to rule forever, would that make them feel better I just dont get it
Socialists always have high hopes
Betting sites are far more accurate. They have a 90+ percent chance of the bad guys winning the house and around a 80+ percent of the senate. This will probably be ugly, but I hope I’m wrong
As I said before... The only poll is the one on Election Day...
They are factoring in the "late votes".
They are factoring in the "late votes".
Like those made to order in the slow “counting” process in which Soros backers ask “how many votes would it take for the right person to win this thing?” and then will supply them.
