The Feds targeted MacArthur Park near downtown LA. Same place that Greg Bovino's unit targeted illegal aliens last year.

This is NOT your 1960s MacArthur Park. I drove by there about 40 years ago and haven’t been in that area since then.

‘L.A.’s fine, the sun shines most the time
And the feeling is “lay back”
Palm trees grow and rents are low
But you know I keep thinkin’ about
Making my way back’ I made it back thank you Jesus.

Understanding Open-Air Drug Markets
An open-air drug market is a public or semi-public location where buyers and sellers conduct illegal drug transactions in plain sight, often repeatedly in the same spot legalclarity.org. Unlike private dealing, these markets are visible to anyone, making them easier to locate but also more vulnerable to law enforcement.

Common Locations and Characteristics
These markets often appear in street corners, public parks, alleys behind commercial buildings, and areas around vacant or abandoned properties legalclarity.org. They thrive in neighborhoods with:

Poor lighting

Limited foot traffic from non-residents

Minimal security cameras

High-density housing with anonymity for dealers

The persistence of the same spot for years is a key feature, with defined roles such as:

Primary dealer – controls the drug supply

Runners – carry drugs or cash

Lookouts – watch for police

Steerers – direct new buyers legalclarity.org

Drugs Commonly Sold
Recent years have seen a shift toward fentanyl, now the DEA’s most urgent drug threat, with seizures nearly doubling over two years legalclarity.org. Other drugs historically sold include heroin, crack, cocaine, and marijuana ASU Center for Problem-Oriented Policing.

Risks and Community Impact
Open-air markets pose direct health and safety risks:

Exposure to discarded drug paraphernalia

Aggressive loitering and intimidation

Potential for robbery or violence when disputes arise ASU Center for Problem-Oriented Policing

They also have long-term community effects:

Declining property values

Closure of legitimate businesses

Increased crime and fear among residents legalclarity.org+1

Law Enforcement Response
Federal law treats open-air drug markets severely, with trafficking penalties ranging from 10 years to life in prison depending on the drug and quantity legalclarity.org. Large-scale operations, such as the MacArthur Park, Calabasas, and South LA raids, have targeted these markets, seizing hundreds of pounds of fentanyl and arresting dozens, often linked to cartels or organized gangs ABC7 Los Angeles.

Key Takeaway
Open-air drug markets are not just about the drugs sold — they are organized, persistent, and deeply embedded in certain communities, with significant legal, health, and social consequences. Addressing them requires coordinated law enforcement, community engagement, and harm reduction strategies.
