My previous immediate Substack column was titled, “Holiday Warnings.”
However, unfortunately, we’ve graduated to “Holiday Terror.”
This weekend we received chilling news about two mass terror attacks. The first was a shooting on Brown University’s campus and the second was against Jews attending an open-air Chanukah celebration on an Australian beach.
We are grieving for all the victims and their families. But lost in this dark weekend was also an explicit warning by the federal government’s Director of National Intelligence that there may be as many as 18,000 terrorists living in our midst.
Yes. This extraordinary disclosure by DNI chief Tulsi Gabbard was ignored by most of the mainstream media. She shared her information in a Saturday interview on Fox News.
It was only a week ago in my latest Substack column that I cited a number of prominent counter terror experts who explicitly warned about an impending major mass casualty attack by Islamic terrorists now living inside the United States.
Gabbard’s warning is extraordinary. But first, a few details about this weekend’s mass casualty events.
In Australia, at least fifteen people were murdered and three dozen were wounded in the targeted attack by two terrorists who calmly shot from a bridge down towards Chanukah celebrants who were on Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach. Despite a spate of antisemitic attacks throughout Australia since October 7, thousands celebrated this iconic Jewish holiday in an outdoor setting.
Murdered was Rabbi Eli Schlanger who helped organized the event. Alex Kleytman, a Holocaust survivor died as he was with his children and grandchildren. Two policemen were among the dead. Among the wounded was Arsen Ostrovsky, a prominent human rights attorney. The victim’s ages ranged from 10 to 87.
The shooters were a father and a son.
One of the attackers, however, was subdued by an unarmed Arab named Ahmed al-Ahmad, age 43. He tackled the gunman’s 24-year old son who’s now in the hospital suffering from gunshot wounds. The father, age 50, was killed by police.
In addition to using long guns, police found two improvised explosive devices at the scene that were “active.”
The Australian mass attack came in the wake of an unusual November 27 Israeli government strategic exercise simulating a massive wave of Jewish immigration following a major terror attack on the Jewish community within the West.
Australian Jews have experienced a surge of antisemitic attacks since October 7. This year alone, Australia recorded 1,654 arson and violent antisemitic attacks.
The Australian government was generally lax about many antisemitic attacks. Israel’s Prime Minister especially admonished Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who earlier this year declared support for a Palestinian state.
Netanyahu said after the attack, “Your call for a Palestinian state pours fuel on the antisemitic fire. It rewards Hamas terrorists.”
Earlier this year it was disclosed that in 2024 the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) launched at least two terror attacks on Jewish sites in Australia. Albanese banned the IRGC and under extreme political pressure, expelled Iran’s Ambassador.
At Brown University, the news was just as bad. A man wearing all black entered a class room and killed at least two students and wounded nine. A lockdown was enforced across the campus and into parts of neighboring Providence, Rhode Island. Last night’s terror reigned throughout parts of the college campus, which was established in 1764,
Providence police chief says a person of interested was taken into custody. FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau used geolocation capabilities to help authorities track down this person. Providence police also received a tip that helped locate the alleged killer. He was found in a hotel in Coventry about 4 am in the morning. Coventry is 17 miles south of Providence. He’s reportedly in his 20’s.
These events and warnings are sobering and alarming enough.
But, lost in the weekend was the release of an official confirmation that indeed there are thousands of terrorists living amongst us in America and are ready to do us harm. The warning came from Gabbard, the former Democrat who joined the Trump administration and now serves as the federal government’s Director of National Intelligence.
The DNI chief said the National Counterterrorism Center believes there are about 18,000 known or suspected terrorists living now in our country.
Gabbard said what we all intuitively know: that President Biden’s open border policy allowed countless terrorists into our country. Gabbard said her greatest concern about the influx is that there are “so many more that we are not aware of yet.”
As a full-time investigative reporter (now semi-retired) I previously traveled to Guatemala which was the main transfer point for all Central American illegal immigrants seeking to enter the United States. I personally interviewed a number of “Cayotes” - people who organized the sometimes elaborate travel and accommodations for the illegals.
One lawyer who represented the Cayotes told me that there were many illegals of military age who indeed were coming from the Middle East and from China seeking to enter the U.S.
Of the estimated 18,000 known or suspected terrorists, Gabbard said 2,000 were Afghan nationals who entered following the disgraceful unilateral withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan in 2021.
Among the Afghanis let into the country was Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who shot two National Guard soldiers in the nation’s capital the day before Thanksgiving.
Lakanwal killed Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, age 20 who was a military police officer assigned to the 863rd Military Police Company of West Virginia Army National Guard.
She was laid to rest with full military honors during a December 9 ceremony at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton, West Virginia.
Beckstrom’s fellow guardsman, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, was critically wounded. He is reportedly making a recovery.
Gabbard said whistleblowers have come forward who were part of the flawed and rushed vetting process for Afghanis. She said they told her they were ordered to rush the vetting process so migrants could enter the country during the massive, rapid influx.
“They [whistleblowers] were told, ‘Hurry up, don’t do the thorough vetting that you normally do because we have to hurry up and get these people into the United States,’” Gabbard said.
She called the situation “devastating” and said it has already led to real-world consequences.
Counterterror expert John Guandolo, who I quoted in my last Substack agrees with Gabbard. He told me, “The problem is we do not know how many are in the U.S. We do know millions of people entered the United States during the Biden administration, many were military aged males from hostile countries, and many are still in the United States.”
But he also is very specific. Guandolo says, “We also know Al Qaeda brought at least 1,000 soldiers into the U.S. in the last year to execute their latest operation which we expect between now and end of February. This will be a series of widescale nationwide attacks in at least 5 states. No local or state police, nor the FBI are prepared for what is coming.”
The Fort Hood shooter, Boston Marathon shooters, San Bernardino Christmas party shooters and the Florida gay nightclub shooter were not directed by anyone. At least that's the official version of those events.

If even 1% are a clear and present danger - assuming roughly 50 million foreign nationals, illegal aliens, green to gold card holders, student visas - that’s 500,000
