Former Trump White House official Marc Short told Politico’s Dasha Burns that the Democratic Party will likely dominate the 2026 midterms.
In an appearance on CSPAN’s Ceasefire alongside Democratic strategist Adrienne Elrod, Short said that the Republican Party is already set to endure heavy losses in the upcoming elections.
“I think it’s going to be a really steep climb, Dasha,” said Short, in relation to GOP midterm efforts. “The reality is that Americans like divided government. They don’t want one party in control. Each time there’s been one party in control, there’s been a backlash.”
The once chief of staff to former Vice President Mike Pence noted that in previous midterms, the incumbent party is much more vulnerable to losing Congressional seats.
“And so, just like in the 2018 midterms when Republicans had control of everything, Democrats had a big year. In 2022, when Democrats are in control of everything, Republicans had a big year,” he said. “So, I think you’re going to see likely a Democrat year in the midterms.”
Short said that due to recent gerrymandering efforts that have decreased the number of contested districts, a Democratic sweep may be smaller than in past years, if still significant.
“The reality is that so many of our house districts are drawn today to gerrymander for each side that there’s fewer really districts that are really competitive,” he said.
“And potentially more that are going to be gerrymandered, right?” asked Burns.

Nobody, nobody, has ever gone into the election booth thinking “I want divided government to control the executive.”
Mid terms have often gone to the party opposing the President because he has been a lousy president.
Bush 47 actually gained congressional seats in his first midterm even though the experts and the polls said the Republicans would lose bigly.
Even Biden, the most incompetent president in history, almost maintained control of the Congress when the experts were predicting a 60 seat Republican victory.
For this nobody who was a Pence tool, it’s wishful thinking. It’s sad that so many RINOs like him are still around.
Based on comments and actions to date from Trump, and others, I'm expecting for November 2026 no machines, end of no-excuse mail-in balloting, a one-day or perhaps two-day election window, and new voter rolls constituted at the County level (there are about 3000 counties, more manageable than tens of thousands of cities and towns).
The latest, Tina Peters pardoned and moving to a federal control of her status, various EO's including for starters 13848, and numerous comments...
"I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS, and also, while we're at it, Highly 'Inaccurate,' Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES, which cost Ten Times more than accurate and sophisticated Watermark Paper, which is faster, and leaves NO DOUBT, at the end of the evening, as to who WON, and who LOST, the Election."

That needs to be repealed once and for all too. When the Government controls your Healthcare, everything else is lost too. It becomes just an argument about how long it will take.
