My grandmother was 16 when she got married (grandpa was 20 I think). Probably wouldn’t fly nowadays but they stayed together till the end which is more than I can say for most marriages today.

A close friend of mine (a doctor, since deceased) told me the best physical age for a woman to have a baby was probably 14.

Getting married at 14-17 was very common in the USA until the 20th century.

Marriage at older ages has a lot to do with what is culturally accepted, and probably now, with widespread birth control and the cultural acceptance of promiscuity.

Older generations married girls off early. That was before birth control and the sexual revolution. Girls at sixteen and seventeen were in high demand then. Times have changed, but men's natural urges haven't. What has changed is the number of cougars after young guys.
