New Yorkers may be a fickle lot, but these days we are not especially mysterious. We want what the rest of America wants.
For instance, we want to go to Costco. The Brooklyn location of the nationally adored discount retailer is now the single place that most accurately reflects the demographics of the city at large, with bargain-hunting Bengalis, Bobovers, and brownstoners united in the temporary fantasy that their home is no different from Teaneck or Houston. Our tastes have never been blander: For the first time, restaurants now make up more than half of the chain stores in New York, thanks in part to the popularity of coffee outlets and “acaí bowl shops” that would be right at home in a strip mall in Raleigh, North Carolina. National retailers of all varieties now have 8,039 New York City locations, compared to 7,288 in 2013.
We want to own cars, too, no different from the American masses for whom having their own vehicle is a basic marker of dignity and freedom. Between 2010 and 2022, New York’s registered vehicle population shot up by 12%, from 1.83 million to 2.08 million, in a time when the number of human beings in the city grew by 2%. Today, 54% of New Yorkers live in a household with a car. We even want to play golf. There has been a seemingly instant proliferation of square-footage-intensive golf-simulator-based businesses in a time when drugstores and gourmet food shops can’t pay the rent.
New Yorkers’ recent tastes underscore a new reality: We are no longer a breed apart. We want to be normal Americans. The city’s politics, too, have started to sync with those of the rest of the...

Well just wait until this mussie guy becomes mayor.
Yeah, that's why you've voted for Communists for the last 30 years.
Normal? Riiiiiiiiiight.
That’s why you want a Communist mayor.
Are you going to elect Madman as mayor of NYC?
LOL...”We want to be normal Americans.”
Yet, we want our dalliance with Communism. Let’s see if “the right people” can make it work this time.”
NY City exists on welfare and other people's money. It really produces nothing. It skims from the Wall Street Casino, and is a big hole for Fed.gov transfer and welfare money.
They can always find 3rd world takers for free shit.
Its why NY City has the politics it does.

I'm reminded of the Jews who decided to stay in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s and thought...
"Yeah, this is bad and it's getting a bit worse. But it won't ever get REAL bad. After all, the Germans are civilized and we've been here for a thousand years. We can tough it out until this madness blows over."
Nice themes.
firebrand, or any of you, do you have a NYC pinglist?
Or could someone post a link to Post 12 onto the New York members page?
If they elect Mamdani, I must disagree.
Or people who just stayed with their increasingly woke churches or synagogues, because their parents belonged, they were confirmed there, their relatives are buried just outside, etc etc. Meanwhile the scriptures may as well be buried, too.
Interviewed this morning on Fox’s Good Day NY, Morondami said he’s going to decriminalize prostitution.
Pimps throughout the City celebrated.
Decriminalize prostitution?
Because????????????????
Because the laws don’t protect the sex workers. They don’t need to be arrested they need to be protected.
WHAT’S Wrong With You????
