Amid increasingly belligerent Russian rhetoric against NATO, tiny Estonia has assumed the role of David standing up to Goliath. In recent months, Tallinn has intensified its signaling that in the case of an imminent Russian invasion, it would not hesitate to strike first. The world is now seeing the country’s logic.
In a September 2024 interview with the Estonian public broadcaster ERR, Estonian General Vahur Karus stated that if Moscow showed signs of preparing for an attack, Estonia would strike the Russians first: “Our capability to neutralize the enemy on its own territory is crucial.” In the subsequent months, Estonia has continued on this path. In late July the country’s defense ministry issued its defense strategy, which aims to “counter threats before they reach Estonian territory.”
Before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the official doctrine was to hold off Russian invaders for 10 days, waiting for NATO reinforcements to arrive. In the words of General Karus, waiting to be attacked first is no longer an option. Just a few years ago, Estonians readying to hit the Russian military on Russian territory would have been considered outlandish. Today, there are abundant reasons why it must be taken seriously.
Once exposed, now in lockstep with neighboring allies
First, it is no coincidence that it is Estonia making this move. Although Estonia and Lithuania have been taking a hard stance against both Russia and Western prevarication over assistance to Ukraine, Estonia’s strategic position is considerably more exposed than that of Lithuania. In wargaming exercises of a possible Russian attack against NATO, Estonia has been a prime target. The conclusion has been that the country could be overrun in 48 hours.

I assume that when the Neocons play war games on Estonia’s side of the border, that Estonia won’t mind Russia attacking them, since war games can easily be perceived to meet their definition of an “imminent invasion”.
Given this and the Baltic States getting ‘cute’ over Kaliningrad, I’m starting to see why the Soviets hung on to them for so long, through the Cold War, when they were willing to let go of most of Finland and all of Austria, both of which were for the taking at the end of WW2.

IF you are CERTAIN war is inevitable, striking first and choosing you greatest advantage, makes sense.

Luckily, Estonia’s green light for Russia attacking only came after these exercises.
The Estonian Defence Forces consist of land forces, navy, and air force.
The current national military service is compulsory for healthy men between ages of 18 and 28, with conscripts serving 8- or 11-month tours of duty, depending on their education and position provided by the Defence Forces.
The peacetime size of the Estonian Defence Forces is about 6,000 persons, with half of those being conscripts. The planned wartime size of the Defence Forces is 60,000 personnel, including 21,000 personnel in high readiness reserve.

What are the peepopaths howling for?
Yes Estonia is in NATO.
A lot of neocons seem to believe that Article V of the NATO treaty would oblige the US to go to war with Russia if another NATO state attacks Russia.
This is of course false. Article V doesn’t even oblige the US to go to war if a NATO member is attacked, only to “render assistance” to whatever degree we decide is appropriate.
But, the only way the neocon rulers of the Gay American Empire have left to salvage their Ukraine fiasco is to somehow drag us into ground combat with Russia. Maybe Estonia is willing to start the party - although it would be quite unwise for them to do that.
Estonia is NATO. This is someone over in Estonia trying to start a NATO vs. Russia war. The person should be put to death. NATO has no obligation to support a member going to war with Russia. Russia has to attack them first. I am guessing this is fake news.
