I read a sci-fi story when I was a teenager; in the opening scene, a guy from the future materializes in the shadows of a Manhattan alley in the wee hours of the morning.

He walks out of the alley, turns the corner, and heads down a flight of stairs into a subway station. Looking up and down the tracks, he makes sure he's the only one there. He then takes a metal flask out of his pocket, crouches down, and spills the contents of the flask over the edge of the platform, onto the tracks below. He thinks "that ought to take care of about a quarter of them."
