Justice Department Says Former Officer Convicted Over Breonna Taylor’s Death During Raid Should Serve Just One Day in Jail

Former Louisville Metro Police Department Detective Brett Hankison is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday afternoon after being convicted of deprivation of rights under color of law in November.

Taylor was killed during a knock-and-announce drug raid on March 13, 2020, during which her boyfriend shot at police and they returned fire. LMPD Sgt. Jon Mattingly was shot during the exchange and has now recovered.

During the raid, Hankison fired ten shots through a window, though they are not the ones that struck Taylor. The officers who shot Taylor were not charged because they were returning fire as her boyfriend shot at them.

The Justice Department has argued that Hankison does not need to serve time as he is not a danger to the public.

Taylor’s family has urged the judge to ignore the recommendation and impose a harsher sentence. Lawyers representing the family called it an “insult” that sets a “dangerous precedent.”

I hope the trigger happy jackass is relieved from police work; never allowed to be a cop again; and prohibited from owning any weapon in the future.

Firing into a window blindly? He’s damn lucky.

The young woman’s death is criminal. The boyfriend was protecting his home from unknown invaders not shooting at identified cops.

These effing raids have too much damage and too many failures and should be stopped for good.

The insult and dangerous precedent is that he was ever charged to begin with.

Breonna Taylor died because her boyfriend shot at police and then hid behind her as a human shield when they returned fire.

I believe it is a Federal charge. And surprise, surprise one her lawyers is the king racist Ben Crump.

“”“The family asked for one thing: that Brett Hankison be sentenced in accordance with the law and federal guidelines. Instead, Tamika Palmer is left, once again, heartbroken and angry,” attorneys for Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, including Ben Crump, Lonita Baker, and Sam Aguiar, said in a statement, according to a report from NBC News.””””

Is it true that Breonna Taylor used to run errands for her drug dealing friends? Isn’t this why the police were at her front door?

“the family called it an “insult” that sets a “dangerous precedent.””

well they’re child decided to hang with a guy wanted for drugs, so it seems they either didnt teach her too well or Breanna chose to “insult “their good teaching and set herself a “dangerous precedent”.

family needs to blame Breonna for her choices.

You are the 2nd to state that their was a Federal charge involved, so I will accept both of your answers.

Trump is then able to pardon the police officer. 😁👍

” he was convicted of depriving Taylor of her constitutional rights”
“He was acquitted on a second count that charged him with depriving three of Taylor’s neighbors of their constitutional rights.”

so, apparently, Breonna has a different set of constitutional rights than the neighbors do?

You are factually incorrect. The officers did knock on the door and identify themselves, several times. Shooting at cops will get you killed, most of the time.

I agree with you though that there was no need to try to arrest him in a night time raid in an apartment complex. That practice has been eliminated, in Kentucky. I’m not sure about everywhere else.

Well, one errand was renting a car that turned up with a body in the trunk but that was a different drug dealing boyfriend than the one that got her killed.

Am I missing something? None of the shots fired from this officers gun struck the decedent but he’s the one to get prison time, even though her boyfriend fired first and started the chain of events?

The officer had no eyes on target and went to the side of the building and fired blindly into the window, putting fellow officers in danger as well as innocent apartment dwellers in danger.

One of the most important rules of firearms is Always Be Sure of Your Target and What's Beyond It.
