The historic Domino sugar refinery in Yonkers, New York will cease operations by the end of this year. The closure of the 130-year-old plant will bring an end to barge and bulk ship deliveries to this section of the Hudson, continuing a de-industrialization trend along the river that has been underway for decades.
ASR Group announced the closure on Friday in a recent press release detailing consolidation of the sugar refiner’s operations in the northeast United States. The company is “making strategic operational investments and optimizations to its U.S. business,” according to the statement.
As of last year, the Yonkers plant was receiving about 40 maritime deliveries of raw sugar per year, primarily domestic product brought by dry bulk barges towed up from West Palm Beach, but also occasionally Caribbean sugar delivered by foreign flag bulk ships.

Yep, all over the country.
Domino Sugar is getting the hell out of Dodge (New York City)
Yonkers is not in New York City.
Domino had another plant on the East River in Greenpoint Brooklyn. Has that closed also?
By getting the hell OUT of New York? Given the current political climate, that seems wise ... although increasing operations in Maryland isn't much different.
The Domino Sugar Refinery is a mixed-use development and former sugar refinery in the neighborhood of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York City, along the East River. When active as a refinery, it was operated by the Havemeyer family's American Sugar Refining Company, which produced Domino brand sugar and was one of several sugar factories on the East River in northern Brooklyn.
Several sugar factories in Brooklyn? Wow, times have changed.
Also owned by ASR...And still going after 99 years in Crockett.
No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to run with me
With proposed 11.5% tax on all businesses in NYC by the Dem primary Muslim nut job, I don’t blame them. That great sucking sound you hear is all the business leaving NYC, including Wall Street.
Don’t ask me. I thought Yonkers was in NYC
I took a tour of the Florida Cane sugar area S. of Lake Okeechobee about 10 years ago. I was surprised at how much of the raw/brown cane sugar was shipped to NY. 90%?

This is the plant I was referring to. The Greenpoint neghborhood and Williamsburg are next to each other.
The entire suburb of Houston called “SUGARLAND” was based around Imperial Sugar and their plant. They moved operations 15, 20 years ago - and the HQ building (silos, too) was blown up just recently (last 2 or 3 years).
Moving admin away from production really ends up with bad decisions. When bean counters run the business, everything ends badly.
