Former Congressman and current OAN host Matt Gaetz was secretly recorded by a fellow airline passenger—who then leaked his private text messages with his mother to the internet.
The footage, which was uploaded by a TikTok user going by the handle tidesofmarch, reveals a private, over-the-shoulder shot of Gaetz texting with his mother, Vicky Gaetz, about everything from family finances to his media strategy regarding President Donald Trump.
In the now-public texts, Gaetz’s mother warns her son not to criticize President Trump, urging him to remember his loyalty to the MAGA movement.
Gaetz’s mom wrote: “Don’t be criticizing the President or his actions. He’s trying to keep us safe. That’s his job. MAGA will turn on you. You will lose viewership. Your days in congress are over, practice of law? Let’s not mess up the media gig. The president has been a very good friend to you. He hates betrayal. Be smart, not stubborn.”
To which Gaetz replied, “I’m trying to guide him, not criticize him.”
He added: “But I’ve never been freer to share my views — and I’ll continue to do so. I think about the people who cheered the Iraq war because they liked Bush. Those people have blood on their hands.”
His mom responded, stating: Don’t guide him in the public square. He has intelligence and briefing that you are not privy to.”
Gaetz responded,” You’d be surprised… Guiding DJT always includes a private and public component. I know how to do it.”
The video also captured Gaetz discussing his financial stability, reassuring his concerned mother that he is thriving: “I’m a happily married man with a son on the way, two penthouse condos, a 1:1 real estate asset to debt ratio. I have $500K in my bank account cash.”
The leaked messages also reveal his views on Iran.
Gaetz wrote:
Iran has been 3 months away from a nuke since 1992. They had surrendered their ICBM program in 2003. They have done no R&D on re-entry capability. These are facts.
…
Iran’s nuclear program posed no threat to the U.S., North Korea actually does.
While critics are breathlessly spinning this as “proof” that Gaetz is backstabbing Trump, the reality is quite the opposite: the messages demonstrate a loyal MAGA ally seeking to influence the America First agenda strategically rather than blindly.

VIDEO UNAVAILABLE..............
Gaetz addressed the privacy violation on X:
“Apparently someone sitting behind me on a flight recorded me without my knowledge. They found me texting my mother about news of the day, family finances, and working on my laptop.”
“Please let this be a reminder to everyone to CALL YOUR MOTHER!”
TWEETS AT LINK................
Critics are salivating at the opportunity to smear Gaetz once again. They conveniently ignore the disturbing ethics of someone spying on a fellow passenger’s personal messages.
Maybe some one had one of those spy pens or tiny camera... or even spy glasses.
That reminds me, I need to call Mom and tell her about my real estate value to debt ratio.
Or you could just watch the video and see what happened..
Gaetz was sitting in the first row, aisle seat in first class. The person filming was in the window seat, second row. There is a large gap between seats because it is first class. Gaetz was holding his phone up, and there was a clear view of it through the gap in the seats. Very low class behavior, but by now every republican, politician or not, should be aware and manage their own privacy.
This sounds canned and fake
LOL! Are we required to put on blinders and ear plugs when people share information in public locations? Do you have privacy expectations in a restaurant or cafeteria or a waiting room?
“You have to get awfully close to someone to record their texts and if Matt doesn’t have spatial awareness, like you can FEEL that when somebody is that close, then he’s an idiot”
Have you ever flown on an airliner?
I agree.
Obviously.
It probably IS.
I’d say your comment is the only thing that’s very stupid.
He addressed it on X and turned it into a net gain for himself.
Meanwhile, you say it’s “very stupid” and by all appearances you have no idea why you say such a thing.
You haven't flown much, have you? As close as those seats are, you don't have to stand up with your cell phone camera to capture what the person in front of you is doing on their lap top or phone. Just lift your phone above the shoulder of the person in front of you.......
I don't know. There's nothing salacious or controversial here. And nothing that portrays either Gaetz or Trump in a bad light. You'd think a fake story would be juicier.
I think it was referenced that it was from a seat behind him.
No I don't have such expectations. But you are again confusing the need to be discreet and avoid risk, with someone actually stealing private electronic communications, and publishing them verbatim for political or financial gain.
I may leave my wallet on the table while I eat at McDonalds downtown. Not smart. But if a criminal grabs it and runs off - is there no crime involved?
Anyway, the whole story seems a bit fake.
To what end?
I, for one, am proud to say that in my nearly 30 years on FR I've never engaged in spouting unfounded speculations in my posts.
Also, I have beach front property in Arizona for sale. I'll throw the bridge in for free.
Article: Apparently someone sitting behind me on a flight recorded me without my knowledge.
“Agreed. Somebody standing up in the airplane seat behind Gaetz (during flight?) filming him texting over a long period of time would be VERY suspicious and get the flight attendant’s attention very quickly. Other passengers would notice, too. Smells like BS.”
I call BS on your post.
Obviously you didn’t bother to look at the video in the article.
I do. As my mother gets older (she's now in memory care) she's all the more worried about if her "kids" will be happy when she's gone. So she's always asking me about my marriage, if we're poor, etc. So I'm always having to remind her that my wife and I managed our money better than she and Pop did, that we've retired (in truth I'm only quasi-retired) in our 50's better off than she and Pop did in their 60's, etc. When she wonders why someone didn't advise her and Pop to manage their money that way, that's when I pretend I'm forgetful and I don't remind her that I tried many, many times to encourage them to live on a budget, save, and invest.
I remember, many years ago, that the lefties got all huffy because Chief of Staff John Sununu took special flights. He maintained he worked on these flights, and had to protect the info. When they didn’t want him to take flights, he took a private limousine service. Even that was too much for them and they hounded him into resigning.
I am NOT a Sununu fan, but he was right about that.
