Hawaii just passed the first climate tax in U.S. history. Tourists will foot the bill. $100M a year. Here’s what lawmakers aren’t saying out loud.

The ink is dry. Hawaii has officially become the first state in the nation to impose a climate tax. It’s called the Green Fee. The name sounds harmless. The impact is anything but.

Senate Bill 1396 is now law. It tacks on a 0.75% increase to the Transient Accommodations Tax. That means every hotel stay, every short-term rental, every cruise ship docking in the islands will now carry a new surcharge. The state expects this to rake in $100 million annually.

This isn’t a symbolic gesture. It’s a full-scale revenue engine. The money will be funneled into climate resilience projects. Think wildfire prevention, coral reef restoration, flood mitigation, and invasive species removal. The state says it’s about protecting the land. But the math tells a different story.

“ The money will be distributed through grants.”

Excellent. I plan to study the climate change effects on near shore billfish. Where do I send my grant request?

Soon, Oprah and Obama will have their wish. No one will be in Hawaii, except them and their super rich cronies.

Everywhere in America has hotel and motel taxes, car rental taxes, and others, paid mainly by tourists. The concept of a tax paid by visitors is nothing new.

Is the tax enough to dissuade people from going there?

It will do the obvious thing, namely quash travel and decrease revenue.

Predicting right now that Hawaii will then react by doubling the tax. They can’t be wrong; only reality is broken, right?

Hungering for OTHER-PEOPLE’S-MONEY! Screw Hawaii and its substantially racist population. There are better places to vacation.

isn’t there a 60 year old photo where a couple recreated it at the same rock by the ocean... kind of debunks those rising sea levels.

“The money will be funneled into”... the pockets of bureaucrats, cronies, politically-connected NGO grifters, etc.

Somehow I am sure there is no requirement for an annual audit and disclosure of where the money went and what was achieved.

One thing I can guaranty is that 100% of the proceeds from this tax will be paid to consultants and others connected to Hawaiian Democrat politicians.

This is not a drill. It’s a test case. If it works, others will follow. If it falters, the backlash will be swift.

Even if it fails, the Leftists in states like CA, IL, NY and other, hard-Left states will still do this.

We went to Hawaii for the 75th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. And then went on a cruise with the family. BUT ... I did not like it. I suppose I was naive, expecting beauty everywhere, but Honolulu where we spent several days was like New York City right on the beach. I didn’t think we’d ever go back - ...
But a grandson has moved there, so we will probably go next year.
