The Danish have caved and will allow US bases in their territory.
When US President Donald J. Trump expressed his desire to gain control of the island of Greenland, it took most by surprise, and generated a panic in the kingdom of Denmark.
While the former colony and present semi-autonomous territory has belonged to the Danish for centuries, the geopolitical situation may cause a historical shift.
Greenland is located between North America and Europe, making it vital for monitoring Russian military activities, particularly ballistic missile threats and naval movements through the Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom (GIUK) gap.
The U.S. already operates Pituffik Space Base in northwest Greenland for missile defense and space surveillance under a 1951 defense agreement with Denmark.
It provides access to the Arctic Ocean and emerging shipping routes, made accessible by melting ice, with a vital role in tracking Russian and Chinese naval activities.
“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.” — Donald Trump, statement on Truth Social, December 2024.
And it’s in this context of a Trump pressure to take control of Greenland that Denmark’s Parliament yesterday approved a bill to allow U.S. military bases on Danish soil.

Thule AFB was Greenland.
Do we not still have a base at Thule?
I think Thule is just a research station as well as I remember.
Wait, am I thinking of Thule in Antarctica?
Something is gotten in Denmark.
That kind of clarifies things. Russia gets half the Artic. With Greenland and the 51st State, US gets the other half. Sounds fair.
I think neither belongs in that sentence.
Next is Canada or at least Alberta.
Pituffik Space Base was formerly named Thule Air Base. It’s about halfway between the US and Russia.

It was an American protectorate then it went back to Denmark after the war. The Greenland Administration surrendered its emergency powers after the war.
“ it went back to Denmark”
By magic?
From Wikipedia.

On 5 May 1945, Greenlanders celebrated the liberation of Denmark in Nuuk.[19] The Greenland Administration under Eske Brun surrendered its emergency powers and again came under direct control from Copenhagen. Kauffmann returned to Copenhagen, where treason charges against him were dropped, and the Danish parliament ratified his agreement with the United States. The United States presence continued in decreasing numbers until the Kauffmann-Hull agreement was replaced by a new base treaty in 1951.[20][page needed] The American presence brought Sears catalogs, with which Greenlanders and Danes ordered modern appliances and other products by mail.[21] The successful experience of an independent Greenland led to a dramatic restructuring and modernization of Danish policy with respect to the colony.

] In April 1951 Denmark and the United States signed the Greenland Defense Agreement. Replacing the 1941 agreement, it allows the latter country to keep its military bases in Greenland, and to establish new bases or “defense areas” if deemed necessary by NATO. The American military can freely use and move between these defense areas, but cannot infringe upon Danish sovereignty in Greenland. The agreement remains in force as long as the NATO treaty does.[123][124]
And their glorious salty licorice ...
Yes. It wasn’t magic.
US decided to do it. Greenland remains a US protectorate. US has crate Blanche to do what it needs to do to 1) protect Greenland and 2) protect the North Atlantic. This second is most important.
If changing Greenland from Danish Krone to US dollar, mining ore, setting up more bases and facilities etc…is deemed necessary, US can do it.
Agreed however you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinager.diplomacy is better than doing the goose step down the main street, it will be cheaper building infrastructure with out active resistance & sabotage.
Greenland & Iceland were named by the Vikings even before Columbus.
President Trump makes you pay attention....and a little down the road....tells you the real story. It’s the ABCs of making a deal.
That is not that is the government/Trumps version of strong arm robbery.
